Word Meanings:

  • خَطِفَ الْخَطْفَةَ (khatifa al-khatfah): To snatch or seize something quickly and stealthily — here, referring to a devil swiftly grabbing a word or fragment of heavenly speech.
  • شِهَابٌ ثَاقِبٌ (shihābun thāqib): A piercing, blazing meteor or flame — bright, penetrating, and inescapable in its strike.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse completes the description of how the heavens are fiercely guarded from the devils who once tried to eavesdrop on the celestial realm. After stating that the devils are pelted from every side and driven away, Allah makes an exception: *"Except such as snatch a fragment by stealth, and they are pursued by a burning, piercing flame."*

The meaning is that some devils, despite the intense guarding, may occasionally manage to snatch a single word — a brief fragment of what the angels discuss among themselves regarding divine decrees or events that have not yet reached the knowledge of people on earth. They seize this morsel in a flash, like a thief grabbing something in the dark, and try to pass it down to their fellow devils below. But the moment they do so, a blazing meteor — a brilliant, penetrating flame that never misses its target — chases after them. Sometimes it strikes and burns them before they can pass the word along; at other times, by Allah’s decree and wisdom, they manage to cast that fragment down to their companions before the flame consumes them. That fragment then reaches the soothsayers and fortune-tellers, who mix it with a hundred lies, deceiving the people who listen to them.

This verse also reveals the profound wisdom behind this divine protection: the devils keep attempting to listen, not because they are guaranteed success, but out of stubborn hope and desperate ambition — yet Allah’s guard is overwhelming, and His command prevails.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, ponder the majesty of this scene: the heavens, that vast and glorious creation, are not left unguarded. The Creator, Who watches over all things, has placed barriers of fire and light to protect the sacred knowledge of the unseen from the corruption of evil forces. This is not merely a historical account — it is a living sign of Allah’s absolute power and His care for the purity of His revelation. If the heavens are so fiercely protected from the whispers of devils, how much more should you, as a human being, protect your heart and mind from their insinuations? The same Allah who hurls meteors at the eavesdropping devils is the One who has given you the Qur’an — a book preserved, guarded, and free from any corruption. Let this verse strengthen your certainty that the message you hold in your hands is truly from Allah, untainted by any satanic interference. And let it inspire you to turn away from all sources of falsehood — fortune-tellers, soothsayers, and every claim of hidden knowledge — and to rely solely on the truth revealed by the All-Knowing, the All-Wise. For He alone knows the unseen, and He alone protects His word from every falsehood, just as He protects His heavens from every intruder.

📜 Verse 8-12 — As-Saffat

[So] they may not listen to the exalted assembly [of angels] and are pelted from every side,
Repelled; and for them is a constant punishment,
Except one who snatches [some words] by theft, but they are pursued by a burning flame, piercing [in brightness].
Then inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Are they a stronger [or more difficult] creation or those [others] We have created?" Indeed, We created men from sticky clay.
But you wonder, while they mock,
