Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sajada (سَجَدَ): To prostrate, to bow down in humility and submission.
- Kulluhum (كُلُّهُمْ): All of them, without exception.
- Ajma‘ūn (أَجْمَعُونَ): Entirely, altogether—an emphatic confirmation that no single angel was left out.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After Allah commanded the angels to prostrate before Adam, they responded with absolute obedience and submission. Every single angel—without any exception—fell in prostration to honor Adam, as an act of reverence and respect commanded by their Lord. This was not worship of Adam, but rather a prostration of honor and distinction, showing the elevated status Allah had granted to the human being He created with His own Hands and breathed into him of His Spirit.
The verse emphasizes this universal compliance through the repetition of "all of them, altogether"—a powerful affirmation that leaves no room for doubt. The angels, who are pure and obedient by nature, did not hesitate, question, or delay. They immediately fulfilled the divine command, demonstrating their complete devotion and unwavering submission to Allah’s will.
This prostration was a profound sign of Adam’s dignity and the high rank Allah bestowed upon humanity. It was also a lesson to all creation: when Allah commands, the righteous respond with swift obedience, regardless of their own understanding or status. The angels, despite their immense power and closeness to Allah, did not consider themselves too great to bow before a creation of Allah—they recognized the wisdom of their Lord and submitted wholeheartedly.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear believer, reflect on this magnificent scene: the heavens and all its inhabitants—angels of light, mighty and pure—bowed in honor of the first human being. This is a testament to your own potential and worth in the sight of Allah. You are not a mere accident of nature; you are a creation honored by the Almighty, dignified above many of His creations. Let this fill your heart with gratitude and humility—gratitude for the noble position Allah has given you, and humility to submit to His commands just as the angels did. When Allah calls you to prayer, to righteousness, to goodness, respond like the angels: with swiftness, sincerity, and complete submission. Do not let pride or arrogance—the very sin that caused Iblis to fall—prevent you from bowing to your Creator. For the path to honor and success in this life and the next lies in humble obedience to Allah, just as the angels exemplified on that glorious day.
