Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Iblis – The proper name of Satan (Shaytan) before his fall; he was a jinn who worshipped Allah among the angels.
  • Istakbara (استكبر) – He became arrogant, proud, and haughty; he deemed himself too great to obey.
  • Kafirin (الكافرين) – Those who disbelieve; those who reject and cover the truth.

Explanation of the Verse:

After Allah commanded the angels to prostrate before Adam, they all obeyed in complete submission and humility — every single one of them, without exception. But Iblis refused. He did not prostrate, and his refusal was not born of ignorance or forgetfulness, but of sheer arrogance. He looked at himself and saw greatness; he looked at Adam and saw clay. His pride swelled, and he said, "I am better than him." That arrogance led him to disobey the direct command of his Lord, and by that very disobedience and rebellion, he became from among the disbelievers — for whoever knowingly and arrogantly rejects a clear command of Allah has stepped into the domain of disbelief.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every human being. The first sin ever committed against Allah was not theft, nor murder, nor adultery — it was arrogance. It was the refusal to submit. And that same disease can creep into our hearts today: when we feel too proud to pray, too important to seek knowledge, too dignified to apologize, or too self-sufficient to beg Allah for mercy. Iblis was not forced into disbelief; he chose it through his pride. And Allah, in His perfect justice, gave him the choice — and the consequence. So let this verse be a mirror for your heart: wherever you find pride, crush it with humility. Wherever you find arrogance, replace it with submission. For the gates of Paradise are opened for those who lower themselves before Allah, and the first one to be locked out was the one who raised himself too high.

📜 Verse 72-76 — Sad

So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration."
So the angels prostrated - all of them entirely.
Except Iblees; he was arrogant and became among the disbelievers.
[Allah] said, "O Iblees, what prevented you from prostrating to that which I created with My hands? Were you arrogant [then], or were you [already] among the haughty?"
He said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay."
