Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Fākhruj (فاخرج): "So leave" or "get out" — a divine command of expulsion.
  • Min-hā (منها): "From it" — referring to Paradise (Jannah).
  • Rajīm (رَجِيم): "Stoned" or "cast away" — meaning one who is pelted with curses, driven away from all good, and rejected from divine mercy.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After Iblis (Satan) refused to prostrate to Adam, showing arrogance and disobedience, Allah addressed him with a decisive and severe command: "So leave it" — meaning leave Paradise, for it is no place for those who defy their Lord. The word "Rajīm" carries a profound meaning: it signifies being pelted and struck with stones, but here it means being cast out and driven away from all that is good, cursed and disgraced, and banished from the mercy of Allah. This expulsion was not temporary; it was a permanent removal from the blessed state he once enjoyed, and it marked the beginning of his role as an open enemy to humanity.

This verse teaches us a powerful lesson about the consequences of pride and disobedience. Iblis was not expelled because he lacked knowledge or ability — he was among the most devoted worshippers — but because his arrogance blinded him from submitting to the command of Allah. His fall reminds us that no amount of worship or status can protect us from the consequences of arrogance. The believer, on the other hand, is called to humility, obedience, and submission to Allah’s commands, for these are the keys to remaining in the shade of His mercy.

Dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your soul. Ask yourself: Do I submit to Allah’s commands even when they contradict my desires? Do I humble myself before His wisdom, or do I let pride creep into my heart? The story of Iblis is not just history — it is a living warning that the path to Allah is paved with humility, and the path to ruin is paved with arrogance. Embrace humility, for it is the door to Paradise, and guard your heart against the whispers of pride that led Iblis to his eternal disgrace. May Allah protect us all from such a fate and grant us the sweetness of sincere submission.

[Allah] said, "O Iblees, what prevented you from prostrating to that which I created with My hands? Were you arrogant [then], or were you [already] among the haughty?"
76قَالَ أَنَا خَيْرٌ مِّنْهُ ۖ خَلَقْتَنِي مِن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُ مِن طِينٍ
