Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- La'nati (لَعْنَتِي): My curse — meaning being cast away from divine mercy, excluded from Allah's grace, and subjected to His displeasure.
- Yawm al-Din (يَوْمِ الدِّينِ): The Day of Recompense — the Day of Judgment when all deeds are accounted for and every soul is repaid for what it earned.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is part of the dialogue between Allah and Iblis (Satan) after he refused to prostrate to Adam, out of arrogance and pride. Here, Allah declares the fate of Iblis with absolute finality: "And indeed, upon you is My curse until the Day of Recompense."
This means that the curse of Allah — His rejection, His distancing, and His deprivation of mercy — will cling to Iblis without interruption, from that very moment all the way until the Day of Judgment. There is no respite, no reprieve, and no hope of forgiveness for him. The curse is not temporary or limited; it is eternal and continuous, covering every moment of his existence in this world and until the great gathering.
This divine pronouncement carries profound lessons for humanity. It shows that arrogance — the refusal to submit to Allah's command out of pride — is the root of all ruin. Iblis was not punished for ignorance or a simple mistake; he was punished for deliberate defiance driven by self-conceit. He considered himself better than Adam based on his origin (fire versus clay), and this false sense of superiority led him to disobey his Lord.
The verse also demonstrates the justice of Allah. The punishment fits the crime: because Iblis sought to elevate himself above Allah's command, Allah lowered him with a curse that lasts forever. This is a warning to every soul that harbors arrogance, whether in refusing the truth, looking down upon others, or rejecting divine guidance.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear believer, let this verse be a mirror for your heart. If Satan's tragedy began with a single moment of pride, how vigilant must we be against this destructive trait? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "No one who has an atom's weight of pride in his heart will enter Paradise." (Muslim)
Yet, the door of repentance remains open for the children of Adam — unlike Iblis, who was cursed and sealed his fate. Allah says: "Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins." (Az-Zumar 39:53)
So rush to humility, submission, and obedience. Lower your wing to the believers, seek refuge in Allah from the whispers of the accursed Satan, and never let pride creep into your heart — for it was the very sin that brought down the most wretched of creatures, while humility was the trait that elevated the best of creation, our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who said: "Whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allah, Allah raises him." (Muslim)
Let this verse strengthen your faith, deepen your awareness of Allah's justice, and fill your heart with gratitude for the mercy that is still within your reach — a mercy that Satan himself was denied forever.
