Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Shakartum (شَكَرْتُمْ): You are grateful; acknowledging Allah’s blessings with the heart, tongue, and limbs, and using them in obedience to Him.
- Aamantum (وَآمَنتُمْ): You believe; having sincere faith in Allah, His Messenger, and all that He has revealed, with certainty in the heart and action upon it.
- Shākiran (شَاكِرًا): The Most Appreciative; He who accepts the deeds of His servants and multiplies their reward out of His grace.
- ʿAlīman (عَلِيمًا): The All-Knowing; He knows the sincerity of your gratitude and the truth of your faith, and nothing is hidden from Him.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
O humanity, reflect deeply on this profound question: What would Allah gain by punishing you if you are grateful and believe? The answer is nothing at all—for He is the Self-Sufficient, the Rich beyond any need of His creation. He does not punish out of cruelty or for any benefit to Himself; He is free of all needs and desires. Punishment only comes as a just consequence of your own sins and ingratitude. So if you turn to Him in gratitude for His countless blessings, and you believe in Him with sincerity—in His oneness, His mercy, and His messenger—then He has no reason to afflict you with His wrath. Instead, His mercy embraces you, and His forgiveness covers you.
And know that Allah is Shākir (Most Appreciative) and ʿAlīm (All-Knowing). He is not like the kings of this world who forget the favors of their subjects or neglect their loyalty. Rather, He sees every act of gratitude, no matter how small, and every seed of faith, no matter how hidden in the heart. He acknowledges your thankfulness by rewarding you abundantly, multiplying your good deeds beyond measure, and He knows the truth of your belief—whether it is genuine or merely outward. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and He will give each soul what it truly deserves.
So, dear believer, let this verse fill your heart with hope and tranquility. Your Lord does not seek to harm you; He seeks your success and salvation. The door of repentance and gratitude is always open. Whenever you thank Him, He draws nearer to you; whenever you believe in Him, He elevates your rank. He is the One who appreciates a sip of water you drink with His name, a smile you share with His creation, and a prayer you whisper in the dark of night. He is not in need of your worship, but you are in desperate need of His mercy. So rush to Him with a grateful heart and a firm faith, and you will find Him more generous than you could ever imagine—rewarding you in this life with peace, and in the Hereafter with gardens beneath which rivers flow, forever. What a beautiful Lord, and what a merciful invitation!
