Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah reminds the Children of Israel of the severe tests and signs He sent them, and how they repeatedly broke their promises despite witnessing overwhelming miracles. When they refused to commit to the laws of the Torah, Allah raised Mount Sinai above their heads as a terrifying sign, making it appear as though it would fall upon them, and He said: "Hold firmly to what We have given you." This was done to compel them to honor the covenant they had made. Then, Allah commanded them to enter the gate of Jerusalem (Bayt al-Maqdis) in a state of prostration and humility, but instead of entering with reverence, they entered crawling on their backsides, mocking the command. Furthermore, Allah prohibited them from transgressing on the Sabbath by fishing, yet they violated this command by setting traps on Friday and collecting the catch on Sunday, thereby breaking the sanctity of the Sabbath. Despite all this, Allah took from them a solemn, binding covenant—they said, "We hear and we obey"—but they turned away and broke it repeatedly.
This verse serves as a profound lesson for humanity: the covenant of Allah is not a matter of mere words but of sincere obedience and steadfastness. The Children of Israel were given every chance—miracles, divine signs, and clear commands—yet their hearts were hardened, and they chose rebellion over submission. Their story is a warning to us all: do not be like those who hear the truth but distort it, or who promise obedience but then turn away. Allah does not need our obedience; rather, it is we who need His guidance and mercy. The Quran calls us to a higher standard—to be a community that truly listens, understands, and acts upon the words of Allah with sincerity and devotion. Let us learn from their mistakes and strive to be among those who honor their covenant with Allah, for He is the Most Merciful to those who repent and return to Him.
