Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Hamān: The chief minister and close advisor of Pharaoh, entrusted with construction and administrative affairs.
- Sarḥan: A tall, elevated, and magnificent building or tower, clearly visible from afar.
- Al-Asbāb: The means, pathways, or routes—here referring to the ways leading to the heavens.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah narrates to us the arrogant and defiant response of Pharaoh to the call of Prophet Musa (peace be upon him). When Musa invited him to believe in the Lord of all worlds—the One who created the heavens and the earth—Pharaoh, in his pride and stubbornness, turned to his minister Haman and commanded him: "O Haman, build for me a lofty tower!" His stated purpose was: "Perhaps I may reach the pathways"—meaning the gates and routes of the heavens—so that he could climb up and see for himself the God of Musa, whom Musa claimed to be above the heavens. Pharaoh then added that he believed Musa to be a liar in his claim that there is a Lord worthy of worship.
This request reveals the depth of Pharaoh's arrogance and his utter ignorance. He imagined that the Creator of the universe, who is far above any physical place or limitation, could be reached by climbing a physical structure. He failed to understand that Allah is not confined to a location, and that the path to Him is not through bricks and mortar, but through sincere faith, humility, and submission to His will.
Allah then informs us that Pharaoh's evil deed was made to appear beautiful to him—he saw his disbelief and defiance as something praiseworthy—and he was turned away from the path of truth. His entire scheme, his plotting, and his attempts to deceive his people into thinking he was right and Musa was wrong, amounted to nothing but loss and ruin. His cunning brought him no benefit in this world, for he drowned in the sea, and it will bring him eternal punishment in the Hereafter.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every seeker of truth. Pharaoh possessed immense power, wealth, and resources—he could command the construction of towering buildings and command armies—yet none of this could bring him closer to the truth. In fact, his power and arrogance became the very veils that blinded him from seeing the obvious signs of Allah. How many people today, like Pharaoh, are deceived by their material achievements, their intellect, or their social status, thinking that these can substitute for faith and submission to Allah? The Quran reminds us that true success lies not in reaching the heavens physically, but in humbling our hearts before the Creator of the heavens. The doors of the heavens are opened not by climbing towers, but by sincere repentance, prayer, and remembrance of Allah. Let us not be like Pharaoh, who sought Allah through the wrong means and ended in ruin; rather, let us seek Him through the straight path He has shown us—the path of His messengers and His revealed books.
