Word Meanings:

  • أَسْبَابَ السَّمَاوَاتِ (Asbāb al-samāwāt): The means, pathways, or doors leading to the heavens.
  • فَأَطَّلِعَ (Fa-attiʿa): So that I may look upon or ascend to see.
  • زُيِّنَ (Zuyyina): Made to appear beautiful or attractive.
  • صُدَّ (Śudda): He was turned away or blocked.
  • السَّبِيلِ (al-Sabīl): The path of guidance and truth.
  • تَبَابٍ (Tabāb): Utter loss, ruin, and destruction.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, we see the height of Pharaoh’s arrogance and stubbornness. After witnessing the miracles of Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him), Pharaoh refused to submit to the truth. Instead, he turned to his minister Haman and commanded him to build a towering structure, saying: *“O Haman, build me a high tower so that I may reach the pathways of the heavens and look upon the God of Moses—though I truly think he is a liar.”*

Pharaoh’s words reveal his delusion: he imagined that the Creator of the heavens and the earth could be reached through physical means, as if Allah were a creature confined to a place. He mocked the idea of a Lord above the heavens, insisting that he himself was the only god worthy of worship. This was his attempt to deceive his people and cast doubt on Musa’s message.

The verse then draws a profound lesson: *“Thus was the evil of Pharaoh’s deed made fair-seeming to him, and he was turned away from the path.”* His sinful actions were beautified in his own eyes, so he saw falsehood as truth and corruption as righteousness. He was blocked from the path of guidance because of his pride and rejection of the clear signs.

Finally, Allah declares: *“And the plot of Pharaoh was only in ruin.”* Every scheme, deception, and stratagem Pharaoh devised to fight the truth and mislead his people was destined for complete failure and loss. His cunning brought him nothing but destruction in this world and the Hereafter.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This verse carries a timeless warning for every soul: beware of letting arrogance and the love of power blind you to the truth. Pharaoh had everything—wealth, authority, and a kingdom—yet none of it benefited him when he rejected his Creator. His end was drowning in the sea, and his legacy is one of shame and ruin.

How different is the path of the believer! The believer humbles themselves before Allah, acknowledges their dependence on Him, and strives to follow His guidance. While Pharaoh sought to ascend to the heavens through bricks and mortar, the believer ascends through sincere faith, prayer, and good deeds—for these are the true means to draw near to Allah.

Let this verse inspire you to examine your own heart: Do you submit to the truth when it is clear, or do you let pride and worldly desires turn you away? Remember that Allah’s promise is true: the plots of the wrongdoers will always end in loss, while the believers who trust in Him will find success in this life and the next. May Allah guide us all to the straight path and protect us from the arrogance that led Pharaoh to his doom.
