Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Aghlāl (الأغلال): Iron collars or yokes placed around the necks, used to restrain and humiliate.
- As-Salāsil (السلاسل): Chains bound around the legs and bodies, used for dragging.
- Yus'ḥabūn (يُسحبون): They are dragged or pulled forcefully, against their will.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse paints a vivid and sobering scene from the Day of Judgment, addressing those who denied the truth and rejected the revelations sent by Allah to guide humanity. When they are seized for their reckoning, iron collars will be fastened around their necks, and heavy chains will bind their legs, while the angels of punishment drag them mercilessly across the ground. They are pulled first toward the scalding, boiling water that sears their skin, and then into the blazing fire of Hell, where they are cast as fuel. This is the ultimate consequence of their arrogance and refusal to submit to their Creator — a fate they once mocked or dismissed in their worldly lives.
This imagery serves as a powerful reminder that no one escapes the justice of Allah. Those who lived in defiance, thinking themselves powerful or immune, will find themselves utterly humiliated and powerless, dragged by forces they cannot resist. The verse follows a broader context in which the disbelievers are warned that their end will be one of regret and torment, and it calls upon every soul to reflect: Will we be among those who are dragged in shame, or among those who are welcomed into eternal bliss?
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, this verse is not merely a warning — it is an invitation. It invites you to wake up before that day arrives, when no plea or excuse will avail. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has sent this message to you now, while you still have the chance to turn back to Him. The very fact that you are reading these words is a sign of His care for you. He does not wish to punish you; rather, He desires your success and salvation. So let this scene soften your heart, draw you closer to your Lord, and inspire you to live a life of obedience, gratitude, and love for Him. The path to Paradise is open, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has shown us the way. Do not let the chains of heedlessness bind you in this world, only to be bound by real chains in the next. Embrace the light of faith today, and you will find peace in this life and safety in the Hereafter.
