Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Harth (حَرْث): Literally means "cultivation" or "harvest." In this context, it refers to one's deeds and the rewards they yield, just as a farmer cultivates land to reap a harvest.
- Nazid (نَزِدْ): We will increase or multiply.
- Nu'tihi (نُؤْتِهِ): We will give him.
- Naseeb (نَصِيب): A share or portion.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse draws a beautiful and profound analogy between farming and the deeds we do in this life. Just as a farmer sows seeds in the ground hoping for a bountiful harvest, every human being sows deeds in this world—whether good or bad—and will reap the results either in this life or the Hereafter.
Allah Almighty tells us that whoever seeks the harvest of the Hereafter—meaning they perform their deeds sincerely for Allah, fulfilling His rights upon them, spending in His cause, and calling others to His religion—Allah will increase for them their harvest. He will multiply their rewards manifold: a single good deed will be rewarded with ten times its like, up to seven hundred times, and even more, as Allah wills. This is the infinite generosity of Allah, who never lets a single sincere effort go to waste. Imagine a farmer whose single grain of wheat produces hundreds of grains—this is but a fraction of the multiplication Allah grants to those who seek His pleasure.
On the other hand, whoever seeks only the harvest of this worldly life—performing deeds solely for material gain, status, or fleeting pleasures—Allah will give them their predetermined share of this world. They will receive what was written for them, but without any multiplication or blessing. And crucially, they will have no share in the Hereafter, because they chose this fleeting world over the eternal one. Their deeds were like seeds planted in barren soil that yield nothing lasting.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this divine equation. Your deeds are seeds, and you choose where to plant them. If you plant them in the soil of this world alone, you may see some temporary growth, but it will wither away with your last breath. But if you plant them in the soil of the Hereafter—seeking Allah's pleasure in every action, every word, every penny spent, every hour of your life—then Allah Himself guarantees to multiply your harvest beyond your imagination.
This is not a call to abandon this world entirely, but rather to elevate your intentions. You can work, earn, and enjoy the good things of life, but let your ultimate goal be the pleasure of Allah and the success of the Hereafter. When you do so, Allah blesses even your worldly affairs, and you gain both worlds. But when you make this world your sole ambition, you lose the Hereafter and even the true blessing of this world.
Let this verse inspire you to check your intentions today. What are you really seeking? The answer determines your harvest—both now and forever. Choose wisely, for the harvest of the Hereafter is eternal and ever-increasing, while the harvest of this world is fleeting and finite. May Allah make us among those who seek the best harvest.
