Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Shurakā' (شُرَكَاءُ): Partners or associates; here referring to the false deities or idols that the polytheists set up as partners with Allah.
- Sharā'ū (شَرَعُوا): They legislated, prescribed, or instituted (laws or practices).
- Kalimat al-Faṣl (كَلِمَةُ الْفَصْل): The decisive word or decree; the preordained judgment of Allah that separates truth from falsehood and defers the final reckoning to the Day of Resurrection.
- Quḍiya baynahum (لَقُضِيَ بَيْنَهُمْ): It would have been decided between them (i.e., judgment would have been passed immediately).
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse addresses a profound and critical reality about the nature of true religion. Allah asks a rhetorical, piercing question: Do these polytheists have "partners" — false deities, idols, or even their own whims and satanic inspirations — that have legislated for them a religion that Allah has never permitted? The answer is self-evident: no one has the right to legislate except Allah alone. Yet, these people follow fabricated rituals, invented beliefs, and man-made laws that contradict the divine guidance, all while claiming to be upon religion.
The verse exposes the audacity of those who attribute to Allah what He never sanctioned — whether it be shirk (associating partners with Him), declaring lawful what He made unlawful, or declaring unlawful what He made lawful. This is the essence of deviation: replacing Allah's perfect legislation with human invention or satanic suggestion.
Then Allah mentions His profound wisdom and mercy: were it not for His preordained decree to defer the final judgment to the Hereafter, He would have settled the matter between the believers and the disbelievers immediately in this world — punishing the wrongdoers without delay. But His wisdom dictates that this life is a test, and the full recompense is reserved for the appointed Day.
Finally, the verse concludes with a stern and certain warning: for the wrongdoers — those who oppress their own souls through shirk and disobedience — there awaits a painful, agonizing torment in the Hereafter. This is not a vague threat but a fixed reality that no power can avert.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder deeply: who has the right to tell you how to worship, what to believe, and how to live? Is it not the Creator who fashioned you, sustains you, and knows what is best for your soul? This verse invites you to purify your faith from every innovation and false practice, and to return to the pure, unadulterated religion that Allah has revealed — a religion built on submission, sincerity, and love for the One True God.
The beauty of Islam is that it frees you from the bondage of human-made systems and false deities. It elevates you to direct connection with your Lord, who legislates only what brings benefit to His servants. Embrace this truth with an open heart, and you will find peace, purpose, and salvation. Do not wait until the painful torment arrives; the door of repentance is open, and Allah's mercy is vast. Return to Him today, and you will find Him waiting with forgiveness and boundless grace.
