Explanation of the Verse:
This profound verse reveals a beautiful dimension of Allah’s wisdom and mercy toward His creation. Allah informs us that if He were to grant every servant abundant wealth and expand their provisions without limit, they would become arrogant and transgress against one another in the earth. Their hearts would swell with pride, and they would oppress, envy, and fight among themselves — for wealth, when given excessively, often becomes a trial that exposes the weakness of the human soul.
However, Allah — in His infinite mercy — sends down provision in precise, measured amounts according to what He wills. Sometimes He expands it, sometimes He restricts it, always according to what is best for His servants. He knows that some people can handle abundance with gratitude, while others would be destroyed by it. Likewise, some can endure hardship with patience, while others would despair. So He gives to each what suits their spiritual state and worldly circumstances.
The verse concludes with two of Allah’s beautiful attributes: Al-Khabir (the All-Aware) — He knows what is hidden in the hearts, the secrets of every soul, and what truly benefits each person; and Al-Basir (the All-Seeing) — He observes all His servants’ actions, circumstances, and needs, and manages their affairs with perfect wisdom.
This is a profound lesson in contentment and trust in Allah. When you see someone with more wealth, remember that Allah may be protecting you from the trial of that abundance. When you face financial hardship, know that it may be a shield against arrogance and a means of drawing closer to Him. The believer understands that Allah’s distribution of provision is not random — it is the result of perfect knowledge and absolute wisdom.
So, dear reader, let your heart find peace in Allah’s decree. He knows you better than you know yourself. What He withholds from you is a mercy, and what He grants you is a mercy. Trust His wisdom, be grateful for what you have, and know that the true richness lies not in abundance of wealth, but in the contentment of a heart connected to its Creator.
