Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Fatanā (فَتَنَّا): We tested, tried, or put to trial. It implies a test that reveals a person's true character—whether they remain steadfast in faith or fall into disbelief.
  • Qablahum (قَبْلَهُمْ): Before them, meaning before the disbelievers of Quraysh to whom the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent.
  • Qawma Fir‘awn (قَوْمَ فِرْعَوْنَ): The people of Pharaoh, i.e., the Egyptians under the rule of Pharaoh, who were known for their tyranny and arrogance.
  • Rasūlun Karīm (رَسُولٌ كَرِيمٌ): A noble and honorable messenger. This refers to Prophet Moses (Musa, peace be upon him), who was noble in his character, his mission, and his status before Allah.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah consoles His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and warns the disbelievers of Quraysh by reminding them of a historical lesson. Allah says: "And indeed, We tested before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger."

The "test" here refers to the trial that Allah placed upon the people of Pharaoh. They were given immense wealth, power, and worldly blessings, yet they misused these gifts and fell into arrogance, oppression, and disobedience. Despite their prosperity, they were ungrateful to their Lord. Then, Allah sent them a noble messenger—Moses (peace be upon him)—who called them to the worship of Allah alone, to abandon their false gods, and to treat people with justice. Moses was "noble" not because of wealth or lineage, but because of his honor in the sight of Allah, his truthfulness, and his unwavering dedication to conveying the divine message.

However, the people of Pharaoh rejected him, mocked him, and accused him of sorcery and lies. They persisted in their disbelief and tyranny until Allah’s punishment overtook them, and they were destroyed in the sea. This serves as a powerful reminder: just as the people of Pharaoh were tested and then destroyed for their rejection, so too will the disbelievers of Quraysh face a similar fate if they continue to reject the noble messenger sent to them—Muhammad (peace be upon him).

The lesson is twofold: it comforts the believers, assuring them that the path of truth, even when opposed by powerful tyrants, ultimately prevails; and it warns the disbelievers that no amount of wealth, power, or arrogance can protect them from Allah’s justice.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, ponder over this verse with an open heart. Allah tested the people of Pharaoh with blessings, and they failed the test by turning away from His messenger. But you, today, have been given the greatest blessing of all—the Qur’an and the guidance of the final Prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him). Will you pass the test by embracing this guidance, or will you follow the path of Pharaoh’s people?

The noble messenger who came to you is not a tyrant or a self-seeking leader; he is a mercy to all mankind. His message is simple: worship the One true God, do good, and prepare for the Day when you will meet your Lord. Do not let the fleeting pleasures of this world—like the wealth of Pharaoh—distract you from what truly matters. The door of repentance is open, and Allah’s mercy is vast. Respond to His call today, and you will find success in this life and the next.
