Word Meanings:

  • Fa-asri (فَأَسْرِ): Travel by night, specifically setting out during the latter part of the night when darkness provides cover.
  • Bi-‘ibādī (بِعِبَادِي): My servants — referring to the believers among the Children of Israel who had faith in Musa (Moses) and followed his message.
  • Laylan (لَيْلًا): At night — indicating the timing of the departure.
  • Muttaba‘ūn (مُتَّبَعُونَ): You will be pursued — meaning that Pharaoh and his army will follow behind you.

Explanation of the Verse:

After years of patience, trials, and steadfast faith, Allah commanded His Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) to take the believing servants of Allah — those who had truly accepted the message and trusted in their Lord — and to depart with them secretly under the cover of night. This was not a random command; it was a divinely orchestrated plan to rescue the oppressed believers from the tyranny of Pharaoh, who had enslaved them and subjected them to unimaginable cruelty.

The verse carries a profound reassurance: *"Indeed, you will be pursued."* Allah did not hide this fact from Musa and his people. He told them clearly that Pharaoh and his mighty army would chase after them. Why would Allah mention this? To prepare their hearts, to strengthen their reliance upon Him, and to show that the escape was not a mere coincidence or human strategy — it was a divine promise that would culminate in a magnificent victory and a humiliating defeat for the oppressor.

Notice the beautiful address: *"My servants."* Allah did not say "your people" or "the Children of Israel." He said My servants — a title of honor and closeness. These were people who had endured persecution for the sake of their faith, and now their Lord was personally guiding their exodus. This is a reminder that when believers remain patient and loyal to Allah, He never abandons them. He calls them His own and leads them out of darkness into light.

The command to travel at night also teaches us a practical lesson: wisdom and careful planning are part of faith. The believers did not march openly into danger; they used the cover of darkness, followed the divine instruction, and trusted in Allah’s promise. This balance between taking means and relying on Allah is a hallmark of Islamic character.

A Da‘wah Reflection:

This verse is a living testimony that no matter how powerful the oppressor may seem, Allah’s plan always prevails. Pharaoh had armies, wealth, and absolute control — yet he could not stop a group of unarmed believers from walking out of his kingdom under the very shadow of his palace. When Allah wills a matter, no force on earth can stand against it.

For every believer facing hardship today, this verse is a source of immense hope. It tells us: your Lord sees your struggle, He knows your sincerity, and He will make a way out for you — even if that way seems impossible to human eyes. The night of escape was followed by the morning of the sea’s parting, the drowning of the tyrant, and the establishment of a nation chosen by Allah.

So hold firm to your faith, obey Allah’s commands with patience, and trust that the same Lord who saved Musa and his people is alive, watching, and capable of saving you. The pursuit of the enemy is temporary; the promise of Allah is eternal.
