Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Rahwan (رَهْوًا): Still, calm, or motionless; the sea remaining in its divided state without closing up.
- Jundun mughraqoon (جُندٌ مُّغْرَقُونَ): A host/army that will be drowned.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After Allah Almighty had parted the sea for Moses and the Children of Israel to cross, He commanded Moses — upon him be peace — to leave the sea in its miraculous state: still, calm, and divided into paths, without the waters returning to their original flow. This was not a command to linger or hesitate, but rather a divine assurance that the sea would remain open as a sign of Allah's power. Then Allah informed Moses that Pharaoh and his army — who were pursuing them in arrogance and tyranny — would be drowned in that very sea. This was a promise of victory for the believers and a decree of destruction for the oppressors.
The stillness of the sea was itself a miracle: normally, when waters are parted, they rush back with force, but here Allah held them back by His will, making them as flat and calm as a road, so that the Children of Israel could pass safely, and so that Pharaoh's army would follow them into the trap of divine justice.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: when Allah commands you to move forward, He has already prepared the path — even if it seems impossible. The sea that was a barrier became a bridge; the enemy that was chasing became the drowned. Trust in Allah's promise, for He never fails His servants. When you obey Him, He grants you peace of heart (the "stillness" of the sea) and guarantees the end of your oppressors. So hold firm to your faith, for the same Allah who calmed the sea for Moses is with you today — He calms your worries, opens your ways, and secures your victory, as long as you walk in His obedience. And know that no tyrant, no matter how powerful, can escape the decree of Allah.
