Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Fir’awn (Pharaoh): The tyrant ruler of Egypt during the time of Prophet Musa (Moses), peace be upon him.
- ʿĀliyan (عالِيًا): Arrogant, haughty, and exalted himself above others with pride and oppression.
- Al-Musrifīn (المُسْرِفِينَ): Those who transgress all bounds, exceed the limits in wrongdoing, and commit excesses in tyranny and disbelief.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the narrative of Allah’s blessings upon the Children of Israel, reminding them of how He delivered them from the humiliating torment they endured at the hands of Pharaoh. Allah says: *“From Pharaoh”* — meaning that He saved them from his severe punishment, his forced labor, his killing of their sons, and his enslaving of their women. Then Allah explains why Pharaoh deserved such a fate: *“Indeed, he was haughty, among the transgressors.”*
Pharaoh was a man who exalted himself above all creation, claiming divinity for himself and refusing to submit to the command of his Lord. He was arrogant toward Allah and toward His servants, and he exceeded every limit in his tyranny, oppression, and corruption on earth. He was not merely a sinner — he was a flagrant transgressor who deliberately and persistently violated the bounds set by Allah, and he sought to lead his people into the same destruction. His arrogance blinded him from the truth, and his excess in wrongdoing sealed his fate, making him a lesson for all who come after him.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: arrogance is the root of all ruin. Pharaoh possessed immense power, wealth, and dominion, yet none of these availed him when he faced the decree of Allah. His pride led him to reject the truth, and his excess in transgression led him to destruction.
Dear reader, reflect on your own heart: is there any trace of arrogance within it? Do you look down upon others because of your wealth, status, knowledge, or lineage? Remember that Allah loves the humble and abhors the proud. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: *“Whoever has even an atom’s weight of arrogance in his heart will not enter Paradise.”*
Let this verse be a reminder to submit fully to Allah, to break the chains of pride, and to embrace humility — for humility is the key to Allah’s mercy and the gateway to eternal success. Allah saved the oppressed believers from Pharaoh’s tyranny, and He will always save those who turn to Him with sincere hearts. So turn to Him today, before the inevitable meeting, and be among the humble servants who are beloved to their Lord.
