Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fa'tū (فَأْتُوا): Bring or produce
- Bi'ābā'inā (بِآبَائِنَا): Our forefathers/fathers who have passed away
- In kuntum ṣādiqīn (إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ): If you are truthful in your claim
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse continues the narrative of the disbelievers' stubborn rejection of the Resurrection. After hearing the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his followers proclaim the truth that Allah will raise the dead from their graves for judgment and recompense, the disbelievers responded with mockery and an impossible demand. They said: "Bring back our forefathers who have already died and passed away — bring them back to life before our very eyes — if you are truly truthful in your claim that Allah resurrects those in the graves."
This demand was not born of sincere inquiry or genuine desire for guidance. Rather, it was an arrogant challenge rooted in denial and mockery. They knew in their hearts that such a demand was not the way to verify the truth, nor was it a condition for belief. The Resurrection is a matter of faith in the unseen — a truth that Allah has clearly communicated through His prophets and revealed scriptures. The disbelievers were not asking for proof; they were seeking excuses to persist in their rejection.
Notice how they said "bring our fathers" — they did not ask for themselves to be resurrected, but for their ancestors, as if to say: "If your claim is true, then show us something extraordinary that we can see with our own eyes." Yet, even if their fathers were brought back, they would still not believe, for their hearts were sealed with arrogance and prejudice.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of Islamic faith: it calls you to believe in the unseen with certainty, and it provides you with overwhelming rational and spiritual proofs — the flawless creation of the universe, the precise revelation of the Qur'an, the noble character of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and the innate disposition (fitrah) within every soul that yearns for its Creator. The disbelievers of old demanded miracles with stubbornness, yet when miracles were shown to them, they still turned away. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has made faith accessible to every sincere seeker — not through impossible demands, but through reflection, reason, and a pure heart.
Do not be like those who set conditions for their faith. Instead, open your heart to the truth that is already shining before you. The Qur'an invites you to ponder, to reason, and to find peace in submission to your Lord. The Resurrection is certain — every soul shall return to its Maker. Will you meet that day as a believer with hope and light, or as a denier with regret and loss? The choice is yours, and the time is now.
