Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- "In hiya illa mawtatuna al-ula" — "It is nothing but our first death" — meaning the only death we will ever experience, that which occurs in this worldly life.
- "Wa ma nahnu bi munsharin" — "And we will not be resurrected" — meaning we will not be raised again after death for any reckoning.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah informs His Messenger (peace be upon him) about the stubborn denial of the disbelievers from his people. They say: "There is nothing after this life except the first death that we die — the death that ends our worldly existence. There is no life after it, no resurrection, and no return. We will never be raised from our graves for any account, reward, or punishment."
Their statement reflects a complete rejection of the Hereafter and an absolute attachment to this worldly life alone. They imagine that existence ends with the breath that leaves the body, and they mock the idea of being brought back to life. Yet, in their very claim lies a contradiction: they acknowledge the first death, which proves that a Creator brought them into existence once — and He who is able to create them the first time is surely able to bring them back again.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this claim. How can a person witness the cycles of life and death in nature — the seed that dies in the earth and then sprouts anew, the seasons that return, the sun that rises after every setting — and still deny that the One who originated all of this can repeat it? The One who gave you life the first time, who formed you in your mother's womb, who sustains you every moment — is He not capable of bringing you back?
This denial is not based on evidence, but on arrogance and the love of this fleeting world. The Qur'an repeatedly invites you to look at your own creation: you were nothing, then you were, and you will be again. Do not let the whispers of doubt close your heart to the truth. The resurrection is certain, and on that Day, every soul will find what it has done — good or evil — fully present.
So, dear seeker of truth, open your heart to the message of the Qur'an. Do not be like those who said, "We will never be raised," and then found themselves standing before their Lord with no excuse. Embrace faith before that Day comes, for on that Day, no soul will be able to say, "If only I had believed." The door of repentance is open now — do not delay, for the first death is real, and after it comes either eternal bliss or eternal loss.
