Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ashrāṭuhā (أَشْرَاطُهَا): Its signs and portents that indicate its approach.
- Baghtah (بَغْتَةً): Suddenly, without prior warning or preparation.
- Dhikrāhum (ذِكْرَاهُمْ): Their remembrance, admonition, or taking heed.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse poses a profound rhetorical question to those who deny the truth: "Are they waiting for nothing except the Hour (the Day of Judgment) to come upon them suddenly?" It exposes the futility of their attitude — they are not awaiting any sign or proof, nor are they seeking guidance; rather, they are merely delaying until the inevitable strikes without warning.
The verse then delivers a crucial reminder: "Indeed, its signs have already come." The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent as a mercy to mankind, and his advent is one of the greatest portents of the Hour. The splitting of the moon, the spread of Islam, and numerous other prophecies fulfilled are all clear indicators that the Hereafter is near. Yet, despite these unmistakable signs, many remain heedless and fail to draw lessons.
Finally, the verse asks with piercing clarity: "But how will they receive their reminder when it (the Hour) comes to them?" When the Day of Judgment arrives, there will be no time for repentance, no opportunity for reflection, and no chance to amend one's ways. The reminder that could have saved them was available throughout their lives, but they ignored it. When the Hour comes, remembrance will be utterly useless — it will only bring regret and despair.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is a loving wake-up call from your Lord. The signs of the Hour are not hidden — they are all around us, unfolding every day. The Prophet ﷺ was sent, the Quran was revealed, and the final moments of this world draw ever closer. Do not be among those who wait until it is too late. Today, the door of repentance is wide open; the path to Paradise is illuminated by faith and good deeds. Seize this precious opportunity before the sudden arrival of that which no soul can escape. Turn to Allah now, with a sincere heart, and let this reminder transform your life. For when the Hour comes, no reminder will benefit — but today, every moment is a chance to secure eternal success.
