Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Kafarū (كَفَرُوا): Those who disbelieve in Allah, His Messenger, and His Book.
- Taʿsan (فَتَعْسًا): Destruction, ruin, downfall, and misery—a supplication of calamity upon them.
- Aḍalla (أَضَلَّ): He caused to be lost, nullified, or rendered futile.
- Aʿmālahum (أَعْمَالَهُمْ): Their deeds and actions.
Tafsir (Explanation):
For those who disbelieve in Allah and His Messenger, there is ruin and utter destruction—a humiliating fall and a miserable end. Allah has nullified their deeds and stripped them of all reward, for their actions were built upon disbelief and were performed in obedience to Satan rather than to the Most Merciful. Their good works, even if they appear virtuous, carry no weight in the Hereafter because they rejected the very foundation of faith: the Book of Allah revealed to His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). They despised it, denied it, and turned away from it, so Allah made their efforts vain and their striving fruitless.
This verse serves as a profound reminder that the value of deeds is not in their outward form but in their foundation. A deed is only accepted when it springs from sincere faith and love for Allah and His Messenger. When the heart rejects the truth, every action built upon that rejection collapses into nothingness—like a mirage in the desert, appearing as water but yielding no drink.
A Call to Reflection:
O seeker of truth, let this verse awaken your heart! Your deeds are a treasure, but their safety lies in the fortress of faith. Guard your īmān, love the Qur’an, and hold fast to the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him), for these are the keys that transform your efforts into eternal rewards. Do not let your works be like scattered dust on a windy day—lost and forgotten. Instead, build them upon the rock of tawḥīd, and you will find them preserved in scales that never tip unjustly. Turn to Allah now, before the deeds of this world become regrets in the next, and let every breath you take be a step toward His pleasure. Indeed, the One who guides hearts is the One who multiplies rewards—so seek Him, and you will never be lost.
