📖 English Meaning
And if only they upheld [the law of] the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to them from their Lord, they would have consumed [provision] from above them and from beneath their feet. Among them are a moderate community, but many of them - evil is that which they do.

Meanings of Key Words:

  • أَقَامُوا التَّوْرَاةَ وَالإِنجِيلَ (established the Torah and the Gospel): To act upon their teachings, implement their laws, and believe in what they contain without distortion or alteration.
  • مُقْتَصِدَةٌ (moderate/balanced): A community that is just, fair, and steadfast upon the truth, neither exaggerating nor falling short.
  • سَاءَ مَا يَعْمَلُونَ (evil is what they do): How terrible and ugly is the conduct of those who persist in disbelief and sin.

Explanation of the Verse:

If only the People of the Book — the Jews with their Torah and the Christians with their Gospel — had truly implemented what was revealed to them, and had also believed in and followed what was sent down to them from their Lord, namely the Qur'an and all the previous scriptures, then Allah would have opened for them the gates of sustenance from every direction. They would have eaten from above them, meaning the rain pouring down from the sky, and from beneath their feet, meaning the plants and fruits springing forth from the earth. This is a promise of abundant provision and worldly blessings for those who sincerely obey Allah's commandments.

Yet, among the People of the Book, there is a moderate and upright group — like Abdullah ibn Salam and his companions — who remained steadfast upon the truth, believed in the Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him), and acted rightly. However, the majority of them — like Ka'b ibn al-Ashraf and his followers — did evil deeds, for they rejected faith, distorted the scriptures, and committed sins. How terrible indeed is what they used to do!

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse carries a profound and timeless message for all of humanity. It teaches us that obedience to Allah is the key to both worldly prosperity and eternal success. When people establish the laws of Allah and live by His guidance, He showers them with blessings from unexpected places. The earth becomes generous, the skies pour down mercy, and life becomes filled with goodness and tranquility.

Dear reader, reflect on this beautiful promise: Allah does not withhold His bounty from those who turn to Him sincerely. The path to a blessed life — free from anxiety, poverty, and hardship — is the path of faith and righteous action. The Qur'an is the final and complete revelation, and believing in it and acting upon it is the way to attain Allah's pleasure and His abundant provision.

Let us not be like those who were given the Book but failed to honor it. Instead, let us be among the moderate, upright community that stands firm upon the truth, so that we may taste the sweetness of faith in this life and the eternal bliss of the Hereafter. Allah's mercy is vast, and His doors of provision are open — all we need is to knock with sincere obedience and unwavering trust in Him.

📜 Verse 64-68 — Al-Maidah

And the Jews say, "The hand of Allah is chained." Chained are their hands, and cursed are they for what they say. Rather, both His hands are extended; He spends however He wills. And that which has been revealed to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in transgression and disbelief. And We have cast among them animosity and hatred until the Day of Resurrection. Every time they kindled the fire of war [against you], Allah extinguished it. And they strive throughout the land [causing] corruption, and Allah does not like corrupters.
And if only the People of the Scripture had believed and feared Allah, We would have removed from them their misdeeds and admitted them to Gardens of Pleasure.
And if only they upheld [the law of] the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to them from their Lord, they would have consumed [provision] from above them and from beneath their feet. Among them are a moderate community, but many of them - evil is that which they do.
O Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people. Indeed, Allah does not guide the disbelieving people.
Say, "O People of the Scripture, you are [standing] on nothing until you uphold [the law of] the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to you from your Lord." And that which has been revealed to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in transgression and disbelief. So do not grieve over the disbelieving people.
