📖 English Meaning
They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the third of three." And there is no god except one God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

(Thalithu Thalathah): The third of three — meaning one of three gods, implying a trinity.
(Layamassanna): Will surely touch or afflict — a strong oath indicating inevitable occurrence.
(Adhabun Aleem): A painful, agonizing punishment.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah declares with absolute certainty that those who claim He is one of three gods have committed outright disbelief (kufr). This refers to the Christian doctrine of the Trinity — the belief that God exists as three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Such a claim fundamentally contradicts the very essence of Allah’s oneness (Tawheed). Allah is not a third of anything, nor is He part of any plurality. He is the One and Only God — unique in His essence, attributes, and divinity. There is no deity worthy of worship except Him alone, and He has no partners, no equals, and no associates in His divinity.

The verse then issues a stern warning: if these people do not cease their false and blasphemous statements, a painful punishment will inevitably befall those among them who persist in their disbelief. This is not merely a threat — it is a divine promise from the Lord of the Worlds, Who never breaks His word. The punishment is described as "painful" (aleem) to emphasize its severity and the gravity of the crime committed against Allah’s majesty.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse. The Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Sustainer of all existence, is far too Glorious and Perfect to be confined within human concepts of plurality or partnership. He is Al-Ahad — the One, the Unique — and As-Samad — the Self-Sufficient, upon Whom all depend. How could the Almighty, Who created every atom and every soul, be reduced to a third of three?

This verse is an invitation to purify your belief and embrace the pure, untainted monotheism that was preached by all prophets — from Adam to Noah, from Abraham to Moses, from Jesus to Muhammad (peace be upon them all). Islam calls you to a simple, profound truth: worship the One Who created you, and Him alone. No intermediaries, no partners, no divisions.

The promise of painful punishment for those who persist in disbelief is balanced by Allah’s infinite mercy for those who turn back to Him in sincere repentance. Allah says elsewhere: "Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful" (Az-Zumar 39:53).

So let this verse be a wake-up call — a moment to examine your beliefs and align them with the truth that has been revealed. Embrace the Oneness of Allah, and you will find peace in this life and salvation in the Hereafter. The door of repentance is always open, and Allah’s mercy surpasses His wrath. Do not delay, for none of us knows when our time will come.

📜 Verse 71-75 — Al-Maidah

And they thought there would be no [resulting] punishment, so they became blind and deaf. Then Allah turned to them in forgiveness; then [again] many of them became blind and deaf. And Allah is Seeing of what they do.
They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary" while the Messiah has said, "O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Indeed, he who associates others with Allah - Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.
They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the third of three." And there is no god except one God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.
So will they not repent to Allah and seek His forgiveness? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
The Messiah, son of Mary, was not but a messenger; [other] messengers have passed on before him. And his mother was a supporter of truth. They both used to eat food. Look how We make clear to them the signs; then look how they are deluded.
