Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is a profound and compassionate call from Allah to the People of the Book, particularly the Christians who had fallen into grave errors in their beliefs about Allah and His Messenger. After exposing the falsehood of their claims, Allah, in His infinite mercy, does not immediately pronounce judgment upon them. Instead, He opens the door of repentance and asks, with a tone of loving concern: "Will they not turn back to Allah in repentance and seek His forgiveness?"
This is an invitation of immense grace. It tells them that no matter how deep the error, no matter how great the sin—even the sin of associating partners with Allah (shirk)—the door of repentance is wide open. They are being urged to abandon their false doctrines, to return to the pure worship of Allah alone, and to ask Him to erase their past mistakes. The verse then reassures them of the very nature of their Lord: "And Allah is Ghafoor (Most Forgiving) and Raheem (Most Merciful)." This means that if they sincerely turn back, they will find a Lord who is not only willing to forgive but is eager to do so, and whose mercy will embrace them completely.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This beautiful verse carries a timeless message for every human being. It tells us that Allah's mercy is not limited by the size of our sins. It is only limited by our despair and our refusal to return to Him. Imagine a Creator who, even when His servants speak falsely about Him, still extends the hand of forgiveness and calls them to come back. This is the beauty of Islam—it is a religion of hope and renewal. No matter how far we have strayed, the path back to Allah is always open. The moment we decide to turn back, we will find Him waiting with His forgiveness and mercy, ready to transform our past sins into blessings and our despair into hope. Let this verse be a source of comfort and motivation for you. Never let shame or guilt keep you away from your Lord. Run to Him, for He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
