Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Lā taghlū" (لَا تَغْلُوا): Do not go to extremes; do not exceed the proper bounds.
  • "Ghayr al-ḥaqq" (غَيْرَ الْحَقِّ): Beyond what is true and right; exceeding the limits set by Allah.
  • "Ahwāʾ" (أَهْوَاء): Desires and whims; plural of *hawā*, meaning the inclinations of the soul that lead away from truth.
  • "Sawāʾ al-sabīl" (سَوَاءِ السَّبِيلِ): The straight, balanced, and upright path.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Messenger, say to the People of the Scripture—especially the Christians—: "Do not go to extremes in your religion beyond the truth." This means: do not overstep the boundaries that Allah has set for you, whether by elevating a prophet to the status of divinity, as you did with Jesus son of Mary, or by inventing rituals and beliefs that Allah never ordained. Extremism in religion—whether in excessive devotion to created beings or in harshness and innovation—is a deviation from the straight path, just as negligence and abandonment of obligations are also blameworthy.

And do not follow the desires of a people who went astray before you—meaning your forefathers and leaders who corrupted their faith before the advent of Muhammad (peace be upon him). They misled many others through their false teachings, and they themselves strayed from the balanced way of truth. When the final Prophet was sent, they further deviated by rejecting him and turning away from his call, even though he came with the very truth that their own scriptures had foretold.

This verse is a profound warning for every generation: the path of Islam is one of moderation and submission to Allah alone. It calls upon humanity to reflect—how can a created being, a servant of Allah like Jesus, be worshipped alongside the Creator? How can human whims override divine revelation? The tragedy of those who went before is that their extremism not only destroyed their own souls but also led countless others away from guidance.

Dear reader, this Qur’anic address is not merely historical—it is a living message for you and me. It teaches us to guard our hearts against two dangers: excessive veneration of people, and blind following of inherited customs without verifying them against the Book of Allah and the authentic Sunnah. Islam is the religion of balance—it honors prophets as the best of creation, yet keeps them in their proper place as servants of Allah; it encourages love and reverence, yet forbids worship of anyone other than the One True God.

So hold fast to the middle path, the path of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and you will find peace in this life and salvation in the next. Do not let the errors of others pull you away from the clear truth, for Allah has sent His final revelation as a mercy and a guide for all of humanity until the end of time.

📜 Verse 75-79 — Al-Maidah

The Messiah, son of Mary, was not but a messenger; [other] messengers have passed on before him. And his mother was a supporter of truth. They both used to eat food. Look how We make clear to them the signs; then look how they are deluded.
Say, "Do you worship besides Allah that which holds for you no [power of] harm or benefit while it is Allah who is the Hearing, the Knowing?"

Cursed were those who disbelieved among the Children of Israel by the tongue of David and of Jesus, the son of Mary. That was because they disobeyed and [habitually] transgressed.
They used not to prevent one another from wrongdoing that they did. How wretched was that which they were doing.
