Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "At'abudoona" (أَتَعْبُدُونَ): Do you worship? — a rhetorical question meant to rebuke and challenge.
  • "Min doonillah" (مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ): Besides or instead of Allah.
  • "Ma la yamliku lakum" (مَا لَا يَمْلِكُ لَكُمْ): That which possesses no power for you — i.e., cannot bring benefit or harm.
  • "Dharran" (ضَرًّا): Harm, injury, or misfortune.
  • "Naf'an" (نَفْعًا): Benefit, advantage, or good.
  • "As-Samee'" (السَّمِيعُ): The All-Hearing — He hears every word, including your prayers and claims.
  • "Al-'Aleem" (الْعَلِيمُ): The All-Knowing — He knows every intention, action, and hidden thought.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah commands His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to confront the polytheists with a powerful, logic-based argument that exposes the futility of their worship of false deities. The question is posed as a challenge: *"Do you worship, instead of Allah, beings that possess no power whatsoever to bring you harm or benefit?"* This includes idols, statues, and even revered figures like Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) — for all created beings, no matter their rank, are utterly incapable of independent control over your destiny. They cannot heal your sickness, grant you wealth, protect you from disaster, or forgive your sins. So why bow to them in hope or fear?

The verse then redirects attention to the only One who truly deserves worship: *"And Allah — He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing."* Unlike the powerless idols, Allah hears every supplication, every whispered prayer, and every declaration of faith. He knows your deepest needs, your struggles, and your sincere intentions. He alone possesses the keys to benefit and harm, and His knowledge encompasses all things — past, present, and future. Therefore, He alone is the true God worthy of your devotion.

This verse is a beautiful invitation to reflect: if you seek protection, turn to the Protector; if you seek provision, turn to the Provider; if you seek guidance, turn to the Guide. The One who hears your silent cries and knows your unspoken needs is closer to you than your own jugular vein. So why place your hopes in powerless creations?

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse is not merely a historical rebuke — it is a timeless reminder for every soul. It calls you to purify your heart from attaching hope or fear to anything other than Allah. When you face hardship, who do you call upon? When you need a breakthrough, where do you turn? The answer is clear: Allah alone is the All-Hearing and All-Knowing. He is never too busy for your prayers, never unaware of your situation, and never incapable of answering your call.

Embrace this truth with certainty, and you will find a peace that no idol, no person, and no worldly power can ever provide. Let your worship be sincere, your trust be complete, and your hope be anchored in the One who holds everything in His hands. This is the path to true success — in this life and the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 74-78 — Al-Maidah

So will they not repent to Allah and seek His forgiveness? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
The Messiah, son of Mary, was not but a messenger; [other] messengers have passed on before him. And his mother was a supporter of truth. They both used to eat food. Look how We make clear to them the signs; then look how they are deluded.
Say, "Do you worship besides Allah that which holds for you no [power of] harm or benefit while it is Allah who is the Hearing, the Knowing?"
Say, "O People of the Scripture, do not exceed limits in your religion beyond the truth and do not follow the inclinations of a people who had gone astray before and misled many and have strayed from the soundness of the way."
Cursed were those who disbelieved among the Children of Israel by the tongue of David and of Jesus, the son of Mary. That was because they disobeyed and [habitually] transgressed.
