Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Qissīsīn (قِسِّيسِينَ): Scholars and learned religious leaders among the Christians who study their scriptures and teach the people.
- Ruhbān (رُهْبَانًا): Devout worshippers and ascetics who dedicate themselves to prayer and worship, often in seclusion or monasteries.
- Lā yastakbirūn (لَا يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ): They do not show arrogance or pride; they are humble and open to accepting the truth.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Messenger of Allah, you will surely find that the most intense and severe in enmity toward the believers are the Jews and those who associate partners with Allah (the polytheists). The Jews' hostility stems from their stubbornness, envy, and their rejection of the truth despite knowing it, while the polytheists—such as the idol worshippers of Arabia—are entrenched in their ignorance and blind following of their forefathers. Their hearts are hardened against the light of faith, and their enmity manifests in plots, persecution, and relentless opposition to the message of Islam.
On the other hand, you will find that the nearest in affection and love to the believers are those who call themselves Christians (Naṣārā). This does not mean all Christians, but rather those among them who are sincere, humble, and possess soft hearts—like the Negus of Abyssinia and his companions who embraced the truth. Their closeness to the believers is due to several noble qualities: among them are learned scholars (qissīsīn) who study their scriptures with sincerity, and devout monks (ruhbān) who dedicate themselves to worship and detachment from worldly greed. Moreover, they are not arrogant; they do not consider themselves too proud to accept the truth when it becomes clear to them. Their humility opens the door for guidance to reach their hearts, unlike the arrogant who reject the truth out of pride.
This verse carries a profound lesson for humanity: the path to faith is paved with humility, sincerity, and the pursuit of knowledge, while arrogance and stubbornness are the greatest barriers to guidance. It also reassures the believers that despite the intense hostility they face, there will always be people of good hearts—even among those who follow other faiths—who will recognize the truth and draw near to them in love and brotherhood. So take comfort, O believers, and remain steadfast, for Allah knows those who are sincere and guides whom He wills to the straight path.
