Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Awliyaa (أَوْلِيَاء): Allies, protectors, or close companions taken for support and loyalty.
- Faasiqoon (فَاسِقُونَ): Those who deviate from obedience to Allah and His commands; rebellious transgressors.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse exposes a profound truth about the relationship between true faith and loyalty. Allah states that if these People of the Book—specifically the Jews mentioned in the preceding verses—had genuinely believed in Allah with sincere hearts, believed in Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the final messenger, and accepted what was revealed to him—the Qur'an—they would never have taken the disbelievers as allies and supporters. True faith naturally prevents a believer from aligning with those who oppose Allah and His messenger.
The verse clarifies that their alliance with the polytheists was not due to ignorance but rather a direct consequence of their lack of genuine faith. Had their belief been real, it would have guided their actions and loyalties. However, many of them were faasiqoon—people who had strayed from the path of obedience, broken their covenants, and followed their desires instead of divine guidance.
This verse serves as a timeless principle for all believers: faith is not merely a claim on the tongue but a reality that manifests in one's choices, alliances, and priorities. Whoever truly believes in Allah and His messenger will naturally distance themselves from those who oppose Allah's religion, no matter how tempting or beneficial such alliances may appear.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse invites you to examine your own heart and loyalties. Ask yourself: Who are your closest allies and supporters? Do your friendships and alliances reflect your faith, or do they contradict it? True faith is a light that illuminates the heart and guides one's steps. When faith is genuine, it naturally produces righteous actions and pure loyalties.
The Qur'an teaches us that believers are brothers and sisters to one another, and their ultimate loyalty belongs to Allah and His messenger. This does not mean being harsh or unkind to others, but it does mean being clear about where your allegiance lies. A true believer loves for others what they love for themselves of goodness, but they never compromise their faith for worldly gains.
Let this verse be a reminder that faith is a living reality that shapes our entire being—our thoughts, our choices, and our relationships. May Allah grant us all sincere faith that transforms our hearts and guides our actions toward what pleases Him. And remember, the door of repentance is always open for those who wish to return to the straight path, for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
