Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

Their eyes overflow with tears, gushing forth abundantly.
Because of the truth they recognized and were certain of.
The witnesses — referring to the Ummah (nation) of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who will bear witness over mankind on the Day of Judgment.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse paints a moving portrait of sincere hearts encountering the divine truth. It refers to a delegation from Abyssinia (Ethiopia), including the noble Negus and his companions, who came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). When they heard the Qur'an being recited, their eyes overflowed with tears — not out of mere emotion, but because they recognized the truth with certainty. Their pure hearts, untainted by arrogance or stubbornness, immediately resonated with the revelation. They had known the message of Jesus (peace be upon him) and the earlier scriptures, and when they heard the Qur'an, they realized it was the same truth from the same Lord, confirming what came before it.

Their response was immediate and profound. They did not hesitate, argue, or delay. Instead, they turned to their Lord in humble supplication, saying: *"Our Lord, we have believed, so write us down among the witnesses."* They asked Allah to record them with the Ummah of Muhammad (peace be upon him) — the community that will stand as witnesses over all nations on the Day of Resurrection, testifying that their messengers delivered the truth.

This verse teaches us a beautiful lesson: the Qur'an is not merely words to be recited, but a living truth that touches hearts and transforms lives. When a person approaches it with sincerity and an open heart, its effect is overwhelming — tears flow, faith deepens, and the soul yearns to be counted among the righteous. These people had never met the Prophet in person, yet their faith was so strong that they begged Allah to include them in his blessed nation.

Dear reader, reflect on this: if hearts that merely heard the Qur'an were moved to tears and faith, what about us who hold it in our hands, recite it daily, and have access to its meanings? Let us not be among those who hear the truth yet remain unmoved. Let our hearts soften, our eyes weep, and our tongues proclaim: *"Our Lord, we believe, so write us down among the witnesses."* May Allah grant us the sincerity of those noble souls and unite us with them in the highest ranks of Paradise.

📜 Verse 81-85 — Al-Maidah

And if they had believed in Allah and the Prophet and in what was revealed to him, they would not have taken them as allies; but many of them are defiantly disobedient.
You will surely find the most intense of the people in animosity toward the believers [to be] the Jews and those who associate others with Allah; and you will find the nearest of them in affection to the believers those who say, "We are Christians." That is because among them are priests and monks and because they are not arrogant.
And when they hear what has been revealed to the Messenger, you see their eyes overflowing with tears because of what they have recognized of the truth. They say, "Our Lord, we have believed, so register us among the witnesses.
And why should we not believe in Allah and what has come to us of the truth? And we aspire that our Lord will admit us [to Paradise] with the righteous people."
So Allah rewarded them for what they said with gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. And that is the reward of doers of good.
