Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Hadith (حَدِيثُ): The news, story, or account of an event.
- Dayf (ضَيْفِ): Guest(s) — here referring to the honored angels who came to Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) in human form.
- Al-Mukramin (الْمُكْرَمِينَ): Those who are honored and treated with great respect and hospitality — both because they are noble angels in the sight of Allah and because Ibrahim and his wife served them generously.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Prophet Muhammad, has the story reached you of the honored guests of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him)? These guests were noble angels sent by Allah with a momentous mission. They arrived at Ibrahim’s home in the form of handsome, unknown men, and when they entered his house, they greeted him with the word "Salam" (peace). Ibrahim, being the epitome of generosity and noble character, returned their greeting warmly and said, "Peace be upon you, O people whom we do not recognize" — for they appeared as strangers to him.
The angels were described as "honored" (al-mukramin) for two beautiful reasons: first, because they are honored in the sight of Allah Almighty — they are among His closest and most noble creation; and second, because Ibrahim and his wife Sarah honored them with extraordinary hospitality, preparing a fattened calf for them with their own hands, as we learn in the verses that follow. They were called "guests" because they appeared in the form of travelers seeking hospitality, even though they were angels — a testament to the fact that when we show kindness to strangers, we may unknowingly be hosting the beloved of Allah.
This verse opens a window into the life of a great prophet, teaching us profound lessons: the virtue of hospitality, the importance of treating guests with honor and generosity, and the reality that Allah sometimes sends His blessings and glad tidings through the most unexpected visitors. It also serves as a comfort to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — just as Ibrahim was tested and then honored with divine messengers bringing good news, so too will the believers who remain steadfast be supported and honored by Allah in ways they cannot imagine.
Beloved reader, reflect on this: Ibrahim did not know his guests were angels, yet he rushed to serve them with the best he had. How often do we miss the opportunity to earn Allah’s pleasure by neglecting the guest at our door, the neighbor in need, or the stranger seeking help? Let this verse inspire you to open your heart and home to others, for in every act of genuine hospitality lies a hidden treasure of divine reward. And know that when you honor Allah’s creation, you are, in essence, honoring your Creator — and He never forgets the kindness of His servants.
