Word Meanings:

  • Thamud: The people of Prophet Salih (peace be upon him), an ancient Arab tribe known for their remarkable architectural skills and strength.
  • Tamatta'u: Enjoy yourselves, take pleasure, and make use of what you have been given.
  • Hatta hin: Until a specified time — meaning until the end of their appointed term or a limited period.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah the Almighty draws our attention to another profound lesson from history — the story of Thamud, the people of Prophet Salih (peace be upon him). After they committed the grave transgression of slaughtering the she-camel, which was a divine sign and miracle, they were given a final warning and a temporary reprieve. They were told: "Enjoy yourselves in your worldly life for a short while — until your appointed time comes to an end."

This was not a blessing or a reward, but rather a test and a final opportunity. Yet, despite this merciful warning, they persisted in their arrogance and disobedience. They did not use this time to repent or reflect; instead, they continued in their heedlessness. Consequently, the punishment of Allah overtook them — a mighty blast (sayhah) seized them while they looked on, witnessing their own destruction with their very eyes. Their enjoyment was cut short, and their temporary respite turned into eternal regret.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this powerful narrative. How often do we find ourselves granted time, health, and opportunities — yet we waste them in heedlessness, thinking that this life will last forever? The story of Thamud is not merely a tale of the past; it is a mirror for every generation. Allah grants us respite, not because He is unaware of our actions, but to give us the chance to turn back to Him.

This verse invites you to ask yourself: What have you done with the time you have been given? Have you used it to draw closer to your Creator, to mend your relationship with Him, and to serve His creation? Or have you been deceived by the temporary pleasures of this world?

The greatest success lies in recognizing the signs of Allah and responding to His call before the appointed time arrives. Do not wait until it is too late. The door of repentance is open, and Allah's mercy is vast. Return to Him today, for tomorrow may never come. Let the story of Thamud be a reminder that no power, wealth, or strength can protect us from the decree of Allah — but His mercy and forgiveness are available to all who sincerely seek them.

📜 Verse 41-45 — Adh-Dhariyat

And in 'Aad [was a sign], when We sent against them the barren wind.
It left nothing of what it came upon but that it made it like disintegrated ruins.
And in Thamud, when it was said to them, "Enjoy yourselves for a time."
But they were insolent toward the command of their Lord, so the thunderbolt seized them while they were looking on.
And they were unable to arise, nor could they defend themselves.
