Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Afasihrun (أَفَسِحْرٌ): "Is this magic?" — a rhetorical question expressing astonishment and rebuke.
- Hādhā (هَٰذَا): "This" — referring to the punishment they now witness with their own eyes.
- Am antum lā tubṣirūn (أَمْ أَنتُمْ لَا تُبْصِرُونَ): "Or do you not see?" — meaning, are you blind to what is before you, just as you were blind to the truth in the world?
Explanation of the Verse:
On the Day of Judgment, as the disbelievers are cast into the blazing Fire, they are addressed with a stern, reproachful question that cuts to the heart of their former arrogance. They are asked: "Is this punishment you now witness magic, as you used to call the truth that was brought to you 'magic'? Or are you simply unable to see it now, just as you refused to see the signs of Allah in your worldly life?"
This is a rhetorical question that leaves them with no excuse. They cannot claim this is sorcery, for magic is an illusion that vanishes, while this punishment is a tangible, inescapable reality. Nor can they claim they do not see it, for the Fire is before their very eyes, its heat scorching their faces. The question exposes their utter helplessness and the futility of their former denial.
Then comes the crushing verdict: they are told to taste the heat of this Fire. Whether they bear it patiently or not, it makes no difference — the torment will not be lightened for them, nor will they ever be released from it. They are recompensed solely for what they used to do in the world: their rejection of the truth, their mockery of the messengers, and their persistence in sin.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is a profound wake-up call. In this life, the truth may sometimes seem hidden, and falsehood may appear attractive — just as magic dazzles the eyes. But on that Day, all veils will be lifted, and every soul will see reality as it is. The question posed to the disbelievers is, in essence, a question to you today: Will you open your eyes now, while you still have the chance, to see the signs of Allah around you — the Qur'an, the universe, your own creation — or will you wait until the Fire is before you and it is too late?
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) called people to this truth with mercy and wisdom. He warned of this Day and promised the Gardens of delight for those who believe and do righteous deeds. Do not let your heart be hardened like those who saw the truth but turned away. The Qur'an is not magic — it is the light that guides to every good, and the key to eternal happiness. Embrace it before the Day comes when seeing will no longer benefit the soul that refused to see.
