Word Meanings:

  • Ahlām (أَحْلَامُهُمْ): Their minds/intellects.
  • Ṭāghūn (طَاغُونَ): People who have transgressed all bounds in arrogance, obstinacy, and rebellion against the truth.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Most High, poses a rhetorical question to expose the absurdity of the disbelievers' claims against the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). They accused him of being a poet, a soothsayer, a madman, and a sorcerer — accusations that are inherently contradictory and cannot all be true of one person at the same time.

So Allah asks: Do their minds and intellects actually command them to utter such self-contradictory statements? Do sound minds ever order a person to combine mutually exclusive descriptions in a single claim? Of course not. A rational person would never accept such glaring inconsistency.

The verse then clarifies the real situation: they are not people who follow reason or intellect. Rather, they are a people who have exceeded all limits in stubbornness, arrogance, and tyranny. Their transgression has blinded their hearts and sealed their minds, so they no longer distinguish between truth and falsehood. They know the truth in their hearts, but their pride and obstinacy prevent them from accepting it.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse beautifully demonstrates how the Qur'an appeals to human reason and logic. It invites people to use their intellects to discern truth from falsehood. The very fact that the disbelievers' accusations were contradictory proves that their rejection was not based on genuine doubt, but on arrogance and stubbornness.

For us as believers, this is a powerful lesson: the Qur'an is a book that honors the mind and calls people to reflection. When we approach the Qur'an with an open heart and a sound mind, we find that its message is coherent, consistent, and deeply rational. The truth of Islam does not require blind faith — it invites you to think, ponder, and then embrace the light with certainty. Let this be an encouragement for you to always seek knowledge, use your intellect, and trust that the path of Islam is the path of wisdom and sound reasoning.
