Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • تَرَبَّصُوا (tarabbasū): Wait, linger, or anticipate. It implies waiting with expectation for something to happen.
  • مِنَ الْمُتَرَبِّصِينَ (mina l-mutarabbisīn): Among those who are waiting/anticipating.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah commands His Messenger ﷺ to respond to the disbelievers who said, "He is a poet — let us wait for fate to strike him down with death." They thought that by biding their time, they would see the Prophet perish and his message fade away.

So Allah instructs him to say: "Wait then — for I too am among those who are waiting."

This is a powerful reply that turns their own weapon against them. The Prophet ﷺ is not afraid of their waiting or their schemes. On the contrary, he is confident and assured, because he knows that the promise of Allah is true. While they wait for his death, he waits for the victory of truth and the punishment of falsehood — and indeed, that is exactly what happened. The disbelievers of Quraysh were struck down at the Battle of Badr, while Islam triumphed and spread across the earth.

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: when the enemies of truth plot and scheme, when they mock and delay, do not despair. Be patient, stand firm, and wait — for Allah's help is near. The waiting of the believer is not passive; it is filled with certainty, trust in Allah, and readiness for the moment when His promise unfolds.

And what a beautiful outcome it is! The one who waits upon Allah never loses. The disbelievers waited for the Prophet's death, but Allah preserved him and granted him victory. The same applies to every Muslim who faces hostility for the sake of truth — their end is honor, and the end of falsehood is disgrace.

So, dear reader, let this verse strengthen your heart. When you are mocked for your faith, when people say "your religion will fade," respond with confidence: "Wait then — I too am waiting." And know that the final victory belongs to the believers, as Allah has promised in His Book.

30أَمْ يَقُولُونَ شَاعِرٌ نَّتَرَبَّصُ بِهِ رَيْبَ الْمَنُونِ
