Word Meanings:

  • Sullam (سُلَّم): A ladder or a means of ascent to the heavens.
  • Yastami'oona feeh (يَسْتَمِعُونَ فِيهِ): They listen therein — i.e., they ascend to eavesdrop on the divine revelation or the speech of angels.
  • Sultanin mubeen (بِسُلْطَانٍ مُّبِين): A clear, undeniable proof or authority that substantiates their claim.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the Quran’s powerful rebuttal of the disbelievers’ false claims. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) called them to the truth of monotheism and the Hereafter, yet they rejected it without any basis. So Allah poses a challenging question: Do they possess a ladder by which they climb to the heavens and listen to the divine decree confirming that they are upon the truth? If they truly claim such access to the unseen, then let the one among them who asserts that he heard such a revelation produce a clear, compelling proof to support his claim. But they have nothing of the sort — no evidence, no revelation, and no access to the heavens. Their claims are hollow, built on nothing but stubbornness and conjecture.

This verse exposes the absurdity of their position. If they had any genuine connection to the divine, they would bring forth a manifest proof. Yet they come empty-handed, relying only on denial and mockery. The challenge stands as a timeless testament to the truth of Islam: the Quran itself is the clear proof, the living miracle that no human or jinn can replicate, and the guidance it brings is confirmed by reason, revelation, and the unblemished character of the Prophet who delivered it.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on the fairness of this challenge. Islam does not ask you to follow blindly. It invites you to examine, to question, and to seek evidence. The Quran repeatedly challenges humanity to produce a single chapter like it — and no one has ever succeeded. The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not claim to have ascended to the heavens to bring you a message; rather, he brought a revelation that speaks to the intellect, the heart, and the soul. It addresses the deepest questions of existence: Why are we here? What happens after death? How do we find peace and purpose? The answers are coherent, consistent, and transformative. So open your heart to this truth, and you will find that the proof is not hidden — it is shining clearly before you, waiting to illuminate your path.

📜 Verse 36-40 — At-Tur

Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Rather, they are not certain.
Or have they the depositories [containing the provision] of your Lord? Or are they the controllers [of them]?
Or have they a stairway [into the heaven] upon which they listen? Then let their listener produce a clear authority.
Or has He daughters while you have sons?
Or do you, [O Muhammad], ask of them a payment, so they are by debt burdened down?
