Explanation of the Verse:
This verse strikes at the very heart of a false belief held by the polytheists of Makkah and by many people across the ages. They assumed that the angels—whom they regarded as daughters of Allah or as powerful deities—could intercede for them before Allah, securing their salvation or worldly favors. Allah, the Most High, dismantles this illusion with a single, powerful statement: "And how many an angel is there in the heavens whose intercession will not avail anything..."
The verse begins with "Kam" (how many), which is an expression of abundance and multitude. It tells us that there are countless angels in the heavens—beings of immense power, light, and obedience. Yet, despite their lofty status, their intercession is utterly worthless on its own. No matter how great the angel, how pure their worship, or how high their rank, they cannot benefit a single soul unless Allah grants them permission.
The condition is twofold and precise:
- Allah must grant permission to the intercessor—meaning He chooses whom He allows to intercede, and this is exclusively for those He honors, such as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and other righteous servants on the Day of Judgment.
- Allah must be pleased with the one being interceded for—meaning the person must be a believer in Tawheed (monotheism), free from shirk (associating partners with Allah), and living a life of obedience.
This verse, therefore, crushes the hope of those who rely on the intercession of angels, saints, or idols. It redirects all hope and reliance to Allah alone. The polytheists believed that worshipping angels or idols would bring them closer to Allah, but Allah clarifies that even the angels themselves cannot intercede without His permission. How then could a stone idol or a deceased human being do so?
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, ponder deeply on this verse. If the mighty angels—those who carry the Throne, those who surround the heavens, those who never disobey Allah for a moment—cannot intercede for anyone without Allah's permission, then who are we to place our hopes in created beings? The only path to salvation is to purify our faith, to direct all worship to Allah alone, and to follow the guidance He sent through His final Messenger ﷺ.
This verse is not merely a negation; it is an invitation. It invites you to build a direct relationship with your Creator, without intermediaries. It tells you that the door of His mercy is open to those who sincerely repent and submit. The intercession that will truly benefit you on the Day of Judgment is the one granted by Allah's permission—and that permission is earned through your faith and righteous deeds in this life.
So, turn to Allah now. Purify your heart from shirk in all its forms—whether it be the shirk of worshipping idols, or the subtle shirk of showing off in deeds, or relying on created beings while neglecting the Creator. Make Allah your sole hope, your sole refuge, and your sole object of worship. For He is the One who says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you" (Ghafir: 60). And He is the One who has promised His believing servants that He will be pleased with them and admit them into His eternal Paradise.
Do not let the whispers of Shaytan deceive you into thinking that you need a "middleman" to reach Allah. The angels themselves, with all their glory, stand in need of His permission. But you, O servant of Allah, can call upon Him directly at any moment, in any language, in any state. He hears you, He sees you, and He is closer to you than your own jugular vein. Seize this opportunity before the Day arrives when no soul will avail another soul in any way, and intercession will be of no benefit except for those who earned Allah's pleasure through faith and righteousness.
