Word Meanings:

  • Al-Akhirah (الْآخِرَةُ): The Hereafter — the eternal life after death.
  • Al-Ūlā (الْأُولَىٰ): The first — meaning this worldly life (al-Dunyā).

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse comes as a decisive conclusion to the previous discussion about the false hopes of the polytheists, who wished that their idols and false deities could intercede for them before Allah. The verse refutes this entirely: No — such wishes are baseless. The matter is not in the hands of their imagined gods, nor in their own hands, nor in the hands of any created being. Rather, the absolute ownership and command of both this world and the Hereafter belong to Allah alone. He alone grants what He wills, withholds what He wills, and decides the fate of all things — whether in the fleeting life of this world or in the eternal life to come. No one can intercede with Him except by His permission, and no one can attain anything except through His mercy and wisdom.

This verse instills in the believer a profound sense of reliance on Allah alone. It teaches us that our hopes, our prayers, and our supplications should be directed solely to Him — the One who holds the keys of both worlds. If you desire success in this life, ask Him. If you desire salvation in the Hereafter, ask Him. For He is the Owner of all, and His generosity knows no bounds.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder this magnificent truth: the One who controls the universe, who gives and takes, who honors and humbles, who grants Paradise and warns of Hell — He is your Lord, and He is closer to you than your own jugular vein. So why turn to anyone else? Why place your hopes in created beings who possess nothing? Turn to Allah with a sincere heart, and you will find that He never disappoints the one who calls upon Him. He says in His holy Book: "Call upon Me; I will respond to you" (Ghāfir: 60). This is the beauty of Islam — it connects you directly to your Creator, without any intermediary, and assures you that His mercy encompasses all things. So raise your hands in supplication, and know that the decision of all affairs — the first and the last — rests with Him alone.

📜 Verse 23-27 — An-Najm

They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance.

Or is there for man whatever he wishes?

And how many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail at all except [only] after Allah has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves.
