Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ālā’ (آلاء): The countless favors, blessings, and bounties of Allah.
- Tatamārā (تَتَمَارَى): To doubt, dispute, or argue with skepticism; to be in a state of uncertainty or contention.
Explanation of the Verse:
This profound verse addresses every human being who falls into denial or hesitation: "So which of your Lord’s blessings do you still doubt?" It is a rhetorical question that strikes at the heart of human ingratitude. After listing the magnificent signs of Allah’s power—the creation of the heavens and the earth, the revelation of the Quran, the honored status of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the certainty of the Hereafter—Allah turns to the skeptic and asks: After all these clear proofs, which of My favors can you possibly dispute?
The verse highlights that Allah’s blessings are not limited to material wealth or health; they include the very guidance of revelation, the miracles of creation, the justice of the afterlife, and the mercy of sending prophets. Every breath you take, every beat of your heart, every moment of clarity in your mind—all are undeniable gifts from your Lord. To doubt any of these is to close one’s eyes to the glaring sun of truth.
The addressee here is the human being who, despite witnessing these signs, still wavers in faith or argues against the truth out of arrogance or heedlessness. The question is not asked to seek information—Allah knows all—but to awaken the conscience and shame the doubter into reflection. It is as if Allah is saying: "You have no excuse. The evidence is overwhelming. So tell Me, exactly which blessing makes you hesitate?"
A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:
Dear reader, pause and look around you. The sky that shelters you, the earth that sustains you, the water that quenches your thirst, the faith that guides your soul—every single one of these is a gift from your Creator. When you doubt His promise of resurrection or His wisdom in His decrees, you are, in essence, questioning the very One who has never stopped showering you with mercy.
Let this verse be a gentle yet firm wake-up call: Do not let your doubts rob you of the peace that comes with certainty. Open your heart to the signs around you, and you will find that every atom in the universe testifies to His oneness and perfection. The One who created you, sustains you, and guides you—how could His promise ever fail? Embrace faith with a grateful heart, and you will discover that the blessings you once took for granted become sources of endless joy and tranquility. Indeed, the only fitting response to such boundless favor is submission, gratitude, and love for the Lord of all worlds.
