Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ghashshā (غَشَّى): Covered, enveloped, or overwhelmed something entirely.
  • Mā Ghashshā (مَا غَشَّى): What covered it — an intentionally vague expression used to convey the enormity and horror of the punishment.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse describes the fate of the overturned cities of Prophet Lot’s people. After their wickedness and defiance reached its peak, Allah raised those cities high into the sky and then flipped them upside down, crashing them to the earth. Then, He covered them completely with layers upon layers of hardened clay stones — a punishment so overwhelming and terrifying that the Qur’an does not even specify its full nature, leaving it to the imagination to magnify its horror. The deliberate vagueness in the phrase “what covered it” serves as a powerful rhetorical device: whatever it was, it was beyond human comprehension in its severity and totality. Nothing remained visible of those cities; they were utterly obliterated, erased from the face of the earth as a sign for all who reflect.

This verse follows a sequence of divine punishments meted out to earlier nations — ʿĀd, Thamūd, and the people of Noah — each destroyed for their arrogance and rejection of their messengers. The mention of these historical events serves as a stern warning to humanity: no power, wealth, or status can shield anyone from Allah’s justice when they persist in transgression.

Da‘wah Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect: these nations were mighty, advanced, and prosperous, yet their strength could not save them when they turned against their Creator. Their end is a timeless lesson that arrogance, immorality, and the rejection of truth lead only to ruin. But the same Qur’an that narrates their destruction also opens the door of mercy wide for you. Allah does not wish to destroy you; He wishes to guide you. He sent His final Messenger ﷺ with the same message of monotheism and accountability, but with a complete, preserved scripture and a living example to follow. The choice is yours: learn from the past, submit to your Lord, and secure a future of eternal bliss — or ignore the signs and face a reckoning no one can escape. The door of repentance is open until the moment your soul leaves your body. Do not delay; return to Allah today, and He will forgive you, love you, and grant you a life of peace in this world and the next.

📜 Verse 52-56 — An-Najm

52وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَىٰ
And the people of Noah before. Indeed, it was they who were [even] more unjust and oppressing.
53وَالْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَىٰ
And the overturned towns He hurled down
54فَغَشَّاهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ
And covered them by that which He covered.
55فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ
Then which of the favors of your Lord do you doubt?
56هَٰذَا نَذِيرٌ مِّنَ النُّذُرِ الْأُولَىٰ
This [Prophet] is a warner like the former warners.
