Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • ʿAdhābī: My punishment or torment.
  • Nudhur: My warnings (plural of *nadhr*), referring to the repeated warnings sent through the prophets and the signs of punishment that followed.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse comes as a powerful rhetorical question, posed by Allah Himself, following the story of Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) and his people. When they rejected his call and persisted in their disbelief, Allah’s punishment overwhelmed them with the flood, while His warnings—delivered through Nuh over centuries—had been utterly ignored. The question, *"How was My punishment and My warnings?"* is not asked to seek information, but to strike awe and terror into the hearts of those who hear it. It means: You have heard what happened to those who came before. Now reflect—was My punishment not severe? Were My warnings not true and inevitable? Indeed, His punishment was devastating, and His warnings were fulfilled exactly as promised.

This verse serves as a direct lesson and a stern admonition, especially to the Quraysh who denied the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It reminds them that the same fate awaits those who reject the truth, for Allah’s justice is unchanging. The rhetorical style magnifies the horror of the punishment and the certainty of the warning, leaving no room for doubt or complacency.

Daʿwah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is a call to wake up before it is too late. Allah’s warnings are not empty threats—they are mercies sent to guide you back to Him before the storm comes. Just as Nuh’s people had every chance to believe and were destroyed when they refused, so too does every generation receive its own warnings through the Quran, through the Prophet’s message, and through the signs all around you. Do not let arrogance or distraction lead you to the same end. The door of repentance is open right now—turn to Allah, embrace His mercy, and save yourself from a punishment that, once it arrives, no one can avert. The One who destroyed the tyrants of old is still alive and watching, and His promise is true. Let this verse be the spark that ignites your return to Him, for He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful to those who seek Him sincerely.

📜 Verse 14-18 — Al-Qamar

Sailing under Our observation as reward for he who had been denied.
And We left it as a sign, so is there any who will remember?
And how [severe] were My punishment and warning.
And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?
'Aad denied; and how [severe] were My punishment and warning.
