Word Meanings:
- نِّعْمَةً (Ni‘matan): A favor, blessing, or grace.
- مِّنْ عِندِنَا (Min ‘indinā): From Us (i.e., from Allah’s own bounty and mercy, not earned by the recipients).
- كَذَٰلِكَ (Kadhālika): In this manner; just like this.
- نَجْزِي (Najzī): We reward or recompense.
- مَن شَكَرَ (Man shakara): Whoever is grateful — meaning the one who acknowledges Allah’s blessings, believes in Him, and uses those blessings in obedience to Him.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse concludes the story of Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) and his family. After mentioning that the people of Lot were destroyed by a rain of stones, Allah says that He saved Lot and his household from that punishment — and this salvation was not because of their own merit alone, but as a pure favor and grace from Allah. It was a blessing granted from His infinite mercy and kindness.
Then Allah establishes a beautiful, universal principle: "Thus do We reward whoever is grateful." This means that the way Allah rewarded the family of Lot — by saving them from destruction and granting them safety and honor — is the same way He rewards every grateful believer. Gratitude here is not merely saying "thank you" with the tongue; it is a comprehensive state of the heart, tongue, and limbs: believing in Allah, loving Him, obeying His commands, and using His blessings in ways that please Him.
This verse gives every believer a powerful hope: if you are grateful to Allah, He will protect you, bless you, and save you from hardships — just as He did for the family of Lot. Gratitude is a key that opens the doors of Allah’s mercy and brings His rewards in this life and the Hereafter.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, look at the beauty of this promise! Allah does not say, "Thus do We reward the prophets" or "the angels" — He says, "whoever is grateful." This includes you and me, no matter who we are. You do not need to be perfect; you only need to be grateful. When you wake up in the morning and thank Allah for your sight, your health, your family, and your faith — you are already placing yourself in the path of His reward. And when you face difficulties, remember that gratitude transforms trials into blessings, because the One who saved Lot’s family from destruction is the same Lord who hears your prayers and sees your patience. So be among the grateful, and watch how Allah opens doors of mercy you never imagined. This is the way of success — a way that is open to every sincere heart until the Day of Judgment.
