Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- آلَاء (Aalaa): Blessings, favors, and bounties.
- رَبّكُمَا (Rabbikuma): Your Lord — addressed to both mankind and jinn.
- تُكَذِّبَانِ (Tukadhdhiban): You both deny or reject.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is a powerful rhetorical question that Allah repeats throughout Surah Ar-Rahman, addressing both humans and jinn together. It asks: "So which of the blessings of your Lord do you both deny?"
The question is not seeking an answer — rather, it is a profound challenge that leaves the listener speechless. When you reflect on the countless blessings that surround you — the air you breathe, the earth beneath your feet, the sun that gives light and warmth, the rain that brings life to barren land, the food that sustains you, the health you often take for granted, and above all, the gift of Islam and guidance — how could any rational being deny even one of these?
The verse is structured as a repetition throughout the surah, appearing after each description of Allah's favors — whether in this world or in Paradise. This repetition serves to engrave gratitude deep within the heart. Every time you read it, you are reminded: look at all these blessings, yet you still turn away or disbelieve?
The address to "both of you" (humans and jinn) emphasizes that Allah's mercy and blessings encompass all of creation, regardless of species or status. No one can claim ignorance of Allah's favors, for they are manifest and countless.
A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:
Dear reader, pause for a moment and count the blessings you have right now — your beating heart, your working eyes, your ability to think and understand this very verse. These are not random occurrences; they are gifts from a Lord who loves you and wants you to recognize His care. The verse gently rebukes while simultaneously inviting: don't be among those who deny, but rather be among those who say, "We deny none of Your blessings, O Lord — all praise and thanks belong to You alone."
This verse is an invitation to transform your life through gratitude. When you wake up each morning, when you eat your meal, when you see the sky — let your heart whisper: "Which of my Lord's blessings could I ever deny?" This awareness will fill your life with contentment, draw you closer to your Creator, and protect you from arrogance and ingratitude. Indeed, gratitude is the key that unlocks more blessings, as Allah promises: "If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]."
