Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ālā’ (آلاء): The countless blessings, favors, and graces of Allah.
- Tukadhdhibān (تُكَذِّبَانِ): You both deny or reject — addressed to both humans and jinn.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse is a recurring refrain throughout Surah Ar-Rahman, addressed directly to both humanity and the jinn: "So which of the favors of your Lord do you both deny?"
The question is rhetorical and profound. It challenges both creations to point out, if they can, any single blessing from their Lord that they could justifiably reject or deny. The answer, of course, is that there is none — every breath, every heartbeat, every provision, every moment of safety and health is a favor from Allah that cannot be counted, let alone denied.
This verse comes after mentioning the ultimate reward for those who do good: Paradise. The preceding context establishes that the recompense for excellence is nothing less than excellence itself — the highest reward being the eternal bliss of Jannah. So the question becomes even more pointed: after all these blessings — from the creation of the heavens and the earth, to the mercy of rain, to the promise of Paradise — which of these could you possibly deny?
The repetition of this verse throughout the surah serves as a powerful reminder of ingratitude. Every time it is recited, it awakens the conscience: have we been grateful? Have we acknowledged the Source of all goodness? Or have we turned away, attributing blessings to ourselves or to chance, and thereby "denying" the favor of our Lord?
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader — whether you are human or jinn, believer or seeker — look around you. The air you breathe, the water you drink, the food that sustains you, the loved ones who comfort you, the faith that guides you — all of these are from your Lord. He did not create you to abandon you; He did not bless you to test your ingratitude. He blessed you so that you might know Him, thank Him, and draw closer to Him.
So pause and ask yourself: which of His favors could you ever deny? And if you cannot deny even one, then let your tongue be busy with gratitude, your heart with love, and your limbs with obedience. For the One who has given you all this — and promises you Paradise if you do good — is worthy of your worship, your thanks, and your devotion.
Let this verse be a mirror for your soul: if you find yourself denying His blessings, repent. If you find yourself grateful, increase in gratitude. For the Lord who asks this question is not in need of your acknowledgment — but you are in desperate need of His mercy.
