Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Kadhdhabu" (كَذَّبُوا): They denied and rejected with stubbornness and arrogance.
  • "Bi-ayātina" (بِآيَاتِنَا): Our signs — this includes the verses of the Qur'an, the miracles given to the messengers, and the universal signs in creation that point to Allah's power and oneness.
  • "Yamassuhum" (يَمَسُّهُم): It will touch them, reach them, and afflict them directly — indicating certainty and inescapability.
  • "Al-'adhāb" (الْعَذَاب): The painful punishment prepared for the disbelievers.
  • "Yafsuqūn" (يَفْسُقُونَ): They commit fisq — i.e., they rebel against Allah's commands, transgress His limits, and persist in disobedience and disbelief.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After the previous verse brought glad tidings to the messengers and those who believe in them, this verse turns to the other side of the scale — the fate of those who reject the truth. Allah tells us that those who deny His signs — whether they are the clear verses of the Qur'an, the miracles that supported His prophets, or the undeniable evidence of His power scattered across the heavens and the earth — will not escape His justice. The punishment will touch them directly and certainly on the Day of Judgment.

The reason for this punishment is stated clearly: "because they used to commit fisq" — meaning they deliberately and persistently deviated from the path of obedience, broke Allah's covenants, and chose transgression over submission. Their sin was not one of ignorance or momentary weakness; it was a continuous, willful rebellion against their Creator. They saw the signs, understood them, yet turned away in pride and arrogance.

This verse carries a profound lesson: Allah's mercy is vast, but His justice is equally certain. No one who knowingly rejects the truth and persists in disobedience will be left without consequence. The punishment is not arbitrary — it is the natural and just outcome of a heart that chose falsehood over truth, and a life that chose rebellion over obedience.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder deeply on this verse. Allah does not punish out of cruelty — He punishes out of perfect justice. He sent His messengers, revealed His books, and left no excuse for humanity. The signs of Allah are all around you: the sun that rises and sets with precision, the rain that brings life to dead earth, the intricate design of your own body, and the Qur'an that challenges you to produce even one chapter like it.

When you see these signs and respond with faith, gratitude, and obedience, you open the door to Allah's mercy and eternal bliss. But when you see them and turn away — or worse, mock them — you are not harming Allah in the least; you are only sealing your own fate.

Today, the choice is in your hands. The punishment of the Hereafter is real, and no one can shield you from it if you persist in fisq. But equally real is Allah's forgiveness for those who turn back to Him sincerely before it is too late. Do not let your desires and arrogance lead you to the fate described in this verse. Let the signs of Allah soften your heart, guide your steps, and bring you to the light of Islam — for in that light lies peace in this world and salvation in the next.

📜 Verse 47-51 — Al-An'am

Say, "Have you considered: if the punishment of Allah should come to you unexpectedly or manifestly, will any be destroyed but the wrongdoing people?"
And We send not the messengers except as bringers of good tidings and warners. So whoever believes and reforms - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
But those who deny Our verses - the punishment will touch them for their defiant disobedience.
Say, [O Muhammad], "I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allah or that I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me." Say, "Is the blind equivalent to the seeing? Then will you not give thought?"
And warn by the Qur'an those who fear that they will be gathered before their Lord - for them besides Him will be no protector and no intercessor - that they might become righteous.
