Key Words and Phrases:

  • أَشْرَكْتُمْ (ashraktum): You associated partners (with Allah) — i.e., polytheism (shirk).
  • سُلْطَانًا (sultānan): A proof, authority, or clear evidence (here, a divine warrant or justification).
  • الْفَرِيقَيْنِ (al-farīqayn): The two groups — the monotheists (believers) and the polytheists.
  • أَحَقُّ بِالْأَمْنِ (aḥaqqu bil-amn): More deserving of safety and security (from Allah’s punishment).

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is part of the powerful dialogue between Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and his people, who worshipped idols. Ibrahim is challenging them with a logical and spiritual argument, exposing the absurdity of their fear of lifeless statues while they show no fear of the Almighty Creator.

Ibrahim says: “How can I fear what you associate with Allah?” — meaning, how can I be afraid of these idols you worship, when they are merely carved stones or crafted objects that can neither benefit nor harm anyone? They have no power whatsoever. Yet, astonishingly, you do not fear the One who created you, the heavens, and the earth. You have dared to associate partners with Allah — partners He never sanctioned, and for which you have no proof or revelation from Him. You have committed the gravest sin (shirk) without any evidence, while I worship the true God with clear signs and sound reason.

Then comes the decisive question, phrased with wisdom and fairness: “Which of the two groups is more deserving of safety and security?” — Is it the group that worships the Creator, the All-Powerful, the One who controls all affairs, or the group that worships helpless idols? If you truly know and understand, you would answer without hesitation: the monotheists are the ones who will be safe from Allah’s punishment in this life and the Hereafter, and they are the ones who will attain true peace and tranquility of the heart.

A Da’wah Reflection:

This verse invites every human being to reflect: Where do you place your trust and fear? The one who fears Allah alone and relies on Him finds true security, because he is connected to the Most Powerful. But the one who fears creation, or worships anything besides Allah, lives in constant anxiety — because he is relying on that which is weak and helpless. Islam calls you to free yourself from all false fears and to anchor your heart in the One who never fails. The path of tawheed (monotheism) is the path of peace — peace with Allah, peace within yourself, and peace with all of creation. So ask yourself: which group do you want to belong to? The answer is clear for those who reflect.

📜 Verse 79-83 — Al-An'am

Indeed, I have turned my face toward He who created the heavens and the earth, inclining toward truth, and I am not of those who associate others with Allah."
And his people argued with him. He said, "Do you argue with me concerning Allah while He has guided me? And I fear not what you associate with Him [and will not be harmed] unless my Lord should will something. My Lord encompasses all things in knowledge; then will you not remember?
And how should I fear what you associate while you do not fear that you have associated with Allah that for which He has not sent down to you any authority? So which of the two parties has more right to security, if you should know?
They who believe and do not mix their belief with injustice - those will have security, and they are [rightly] guided.
And that was Our [conclusive] argument which We gave Abraham against his people. We raise by degrees whom We will. Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing.
