Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Yalbisū (يَلْبِسُوا): To mix, blend, or confuse one thing with another. Here, it means to contaminate or pollute one’s faith with something contrary to it.
  • Ẓulm (ظُلْم): In this context, it specifically refers to *shirk* (associating partners with Allah), as clarified by the Prophet ﷺ when this verse was revealed. It is the greatest injustice against the soul and against Allah’s exclusive right to worship.
  • Al-Amn (الْأَمْن): Complete security, safety, and tranquility—both in this world and, ultimately, in the Hereafter. It is the peace that fills the heart when one is certain of Allah’s protection and pleasure.
  • Muhtadūn (مُهْتَدُونَ): Those who are rightly guided—led by Allah to the straight path, with their hearts firm upon truth and their actions aligned with His command.

The Tafsir (Explanation) of the Verse:

This noble verse is a decisive verdict from Allah, settling the argument between the believers and the disbelievers of old. When the Prophet Ibrāhīm (Abraham) peace be upon him—argued with his people about the oneness of Allah, some of them said, "We too are guided, and we too are safe." So Allah revealed this verse to clarify who truly deserves these two great honors.

Allah describes the people of true faith as those who believe—with sincere hearts, affirming Allah’s oneness, His messengers, and His revelation—and then do not mix their faith with any injustice. The word "injustice" here was explained by the Prophet ﷺ himself: when this verse was revealed, the companions felt distressed, thinking, "Who among us has not wronged himself?" The Prophet ﷺ reassured them, saying, "It is not what you think. It is *shirk*—associating partners with Allah. Have you not heard the words of Luqmān to his son: *'O my son, do not associate partners with Allah; indeed, shirk is a great injustice'* (Luqmān 31:13)?"

So the verse means: those who believe in Allah and do not contaminate their faith with any form of polytheism—whether major or minor, hidden or apparent—they alone shall have complete security. This security is twofold: in this life, they are safe from misguidance, fear, and despair; and in the Hereafter, they are safe from the terror of the Day of Judgment and the punishment of Hellfire. Their hearts are at peace because they know their Lord, and they trust in His promise.

And they are rightly guided—meaning Allah has honored them with the light of guidance, showing them the straight path and enabling them to walk upon it with firmness and clarity. Their guidance is not a mere claim; it is a reality reflected in their beliefs, their words, and their deeds.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on the beauty of this verse. Allah does not require perfection from His servants; He requires purity of faith. The door of security is open to every believer who sincerely worships Allah alone, who keeps their heart free from the pollution of shirk, and who turns back to Him in repentance whenever they fall short.

This is the essence of Islam: a pure, unshakable connection with the Creator, free from false intermediaries and invented partners. When your heart is anchored in Allah alone, no fear can truly harm you, and no darkness can extinguish your light. You become a person of *amn*—security—in a world full of anxiety, and a person of *hidāyah*—guidance—in a world full of confusion.

So ask yourself: Is my faith pure? Have I cleansed it from the subtle forms of shirk, such as showing off, relying on created beings, or fearing them more than Allah? Purify your heart, renew your intention, and hold fast to the rope of Allah. Then, by His grace, you will be among those described in this verse—safe, secure, and guided to His eternal pleasure.

📜 Verse 80-84 — Al-An'am

And his people argued with him. He said, "Do you argue with me concerning Allah while He has guided me? And I fear not what you associate with Him [and will not be harmed] unless my Lord should will something. My Lord encompasses all things in knowledge; then will you not remember?
And how should I fear what you associate while you do not fear that you have associated with Allah that for which He has not sent down to you any authority? So which of the two parties has more right to security, if you should know?
They who believe and do not mix their belief with injustice - those will have security, and they are [rightly] guided.
And that was Our [conclusive] argument which We gave Abraham against his people. We raise by degrees whom We will. Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing.
And We gave to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - all [of them] We guided. And Noah, We guided before; and among his descendants, David and Solomon and Job and Joseph and Moses and Aaron. Thus do We reward the doers of good.
