Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- اسْتُهْزِئَ (ustuhzi'a): Was mocked and ridiculed.
- فَحَاقَ (fa-haqa): Surrounded and enveloped completely, leaving no escape.
- يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ (yastahzi'un): They were mocking and deriding.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse serves as a profound consolation from Allah to His Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the face of the mockery and ridicule he endured from his people. When the disbelievers of Makkah insolently demanded that an angel be sent down with him—not out of sincere belief, but as a means of mockery and contempt—Allah revealed this verse to comfort His Prophet and to place this trial within a broader, timeless context.
Allah informs us that this is not a new phenomenon. Mocking the messengers of Allah has been the habit of arrogant and stubborn nations throughout history. Prophets before Muhammad (peace be upon him) were likewise ridiculed, belittled, and derided by their peoples. Noah, Hud, Salih, Moses, and Jesus (peace be upon them all) all faced similar scorn from those who rejected the truth.
Yet the verse carries a powerful and decisive promise: the very punishment they mocked and denied eventually surrounded them completely. The word "fa-haqa" (فَحَاقَ) conveys the image of something encircling and closing in from all sides, leaving no avenue of escape. The torment they laughed at when warned about it became an inescapable reality that overtook them entirely. Their mockery did not delay the divine decree; rather, it only sealed their fate.
This is a universal law of Allah: those who ridicule the truth and mock its bearers will inevitably taste the consequences of their arrogance. The punishment that they deemed impossible or far-fetched descended upon them, and their laughter was turned into weeping and regret.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, let this verse be a source of reassurance for every believer who faces mockery for their faith. When you are ridiculed for your commitment to Islam, for your prayers, your hijab, your beard, or your adherence to the Sunnah—remember that you are walking the same path that all the prophets walked. Their mockers were destroyed, while the prophets and their followers were saved and honored.
And for those who mock the believers and the religion of Allah, let this verse serve as a sincere warning. The One who protected His prophets in the past is fully capable of fulfilling His promise today. Mockery does not harm Allah or His religion; it only harms the one who mocks. The punishment that surrounds the mockers in this life or the Hereafter is certain—for Allah's promise never fails.
So hold firm to your faith with patience and certainty. The end belongs to the righteous, and the mockers will see the very reality they denied, when it is too late for them to return.
