Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-‘Ilm (العلم): Here, it refers specifically to the knowledge of when the Hour (the Day of Resurrection) will occur.
- ‘Inda Allah (عند الله): With Allah alone — meaning exclusively in His knowledge and domain.
- Nadheer (نذير): A warner — one who warns people of the consequences of their actions.
- Mubeen (مبين): Clear, evident, and unambiguous — making the message perfectly understood.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah commands His Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) to respond to the disbelievers who repeatedly asked: "When will this promise of resurrection come to pass? Tell us the exact time if you are truthful!" They posed this question not out of genuine curiosity, but rather to mock and challenge the truth.
Allah instructs His Prophet to answer them with wisdom and clarity: "The knowledge of that hour rests solely with Allah. I do not know when it will occur, and no created being — neither angel nor prophet — has access to that hidden knowledge. It is a matter that Allah has kept exclusively for Himself."
Then comes the second part of the response: "I am only a clear warner." This means: My role is not to inform you of the exact timing of the Hour, but rather to warn you of its inevitable arrival and to guide you to prepare for it. My mission is to convey Allah's message with utmost clarity — explaining what He has commanded me to explain, calling you to monotheism, righteousness, and the worship of Allah alone, and cautioning you against disbelief and sin.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) was not sent to satisfy people's curiosity about hidden matters, but to deliver a message of guidance and salvation. His warning is clear, sincere, and sufficient for anyone who seeks the truth with an open heart.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder the wisdom in this verse. The disbelievers of Makkah asked about the timing of the Hour not to believe, but to argue and delay. How often do we find ourselves asking questions that distract us from what truly matters? Instead of asking "When will the Hour come?" — a question whose answer brings no benefit — we should ask: "What have I prepared for that Day?"
The Prophet (peace be upon him) fulfilled his duty perfectly: he warned, he taught, he guided, and he clarified. The rest is between you and your Lord. The knowledge of the unseen is with Allah alone, but the path to success is open before you — it is the path of faith, repentance, and good deeds.
Do not waste your life in futile debates about what is hidden. Rather, seize the present moment to draw closer to your Creator, for the Hour will surely come, and on that Day, every soul will be recompensed for what it has earned. The warning has been delivered clearly — now the choice is yours. May Allah guide us all to the straight path.
