Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Wa'd (الوعد): The promise — referring to the promise of resurrection, the Day of Judgment, and the punishment that awaits the disbelievers.
- Sādiqīn (صادقين): Truthful — those who claim to be sincere and honest in what they say.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The disbelievers, in their arrogance and mockery, turn to the believers and ask with scorn: "When will this promise come to pass — this promise of resurrection and judgment — if you are truly truthful in what you claim?" They ask this not out of genuine curiosity or a desire for guidance, but rather to ridicule and belittle the message of truth. They challenge the believers as if to say, "If you really believe what you say, then bring us the punishment you warn us about!"
This question reflects a deep-seated denial of the Hereafter and an attempt to undermine the credibility of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his followers. Yet, the Quran addresses this mockery with wisdom and patience, reminding the believers that the knowledge of the Hour rests solely with Allah. The Prophet's role is not to know the exact timing of such matters, but to warn and convey the message clearly. The disbelievers' questioning is a sign of their stubbornness, for they have been shown clear proofs, yet they persist in their rejection.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder over this verse and see how the disbelievers of old were so certain of their mockery, yet the promise of Allah came to pass, and they witnessed the truth of what they denied. The Hereafter is not a distant myth; it is a certainty that every soul will face. Do not let the fleeting pleasures of this world blind you to the eternal reality that awaits. The One who created the heavens and the earth, who gave you life and sustenance, is more than capable of bringing you back after death. Let this verse be a reminder to you: instead of asking "when" out of mockery, ask "how can I prepare" out of sincerity. The doors of repentance are open, and the mercy of Allah is vast. Do not wait until the promise becomes a reality you can no longer escape — for on that Day, every soul will see the fruits of its deeds, and no amount of questioning will delay the justice of the Almighty. Embrace faith today, and let your heart find peace in the certainty of what is to come.
