- Fawqahum (فَوْقَهُمْ): Above them (i.e., above the heads of all creation present on that Day).
Tafsir (Explanation):
On that tremendous Day—the Day of Judgment—when the first trumpet blast shatters the earth and the mountains are crushed to dust, and the sky is split apart, becoming weak, fragile, and hanging loose at its edges, the angels will descend and station themselves upon the very borders and extremities of that torn heaven. They will stand at its sides, surrounding it from every direction, in awe of their Lord's command.
And then comes the most magnificent scene of all: the Throne of your Lord—the Majestic, the Supreme—will be carried above the heads of all the angels and all of creation by eight of the mightiest angels, whose size and power are beyond human imagination. These eight bearers of the Throne are among the closest and most honored of Allah's angels, created with immense strength to uphold that which no mind can conceive.
This verse paints a vivid picture of the absolute sovereignty and majesty of Allah on that Day. The heavens, once so vast and solid, will become weak and fragile. The angels, who are themselves mighty, will stand at the edges of this crumbling sky, humbled and submissive. And above them all, the Throne of the Almighty is carried by eight of His greatest angels, signifying that all power, all authority, and all dominion belong to Him alone.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, imagine this scene with your heart: the sky torn apart, the mountains turned to dust, the angels standing at the edges of existence, and the Throne of the Most Merciful being carried above all. This is the reality that awaits us—a Day when every soul will stand before its Creator, and nothing will be hidden from Him.
This verse should fill our hearts with both awe and hope. Awe, because Allah's power is absolute and His command is unstoppable. Hope, because the One who holds this universe in His grasp is also the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. He has given us this life as a test, and He has sent us His guidance through the Qur'an and the Sunnah so that we may succeed on that Day.
So, my beloved brother and sister in humanity, let us not be distracted by the fleeting pleasures of this world. Let us prepare for that Day when the Throne of our Lord will be carried above us, and we will be asked about every deed we did. Turn to Allah in sincere repentance, hold fast to His Book, follow the example of His Prophet ﷺ, and fill your life with good deeds. For on that Day, the only thing that will benefit you is your faith and your righteous actions.
May Allah make us among those who are honored on that Day, and may He grant us the joy of seeing His noble Face in the highest Paradise.
